Wayne E. Smith

Wayne E. Smith age 80, of Quincy died on Monday, November 25, 2024 in Blessing Hospital. Wayne was born in Quincy, Il on April 15, 1944, a son of Virgil and Edna (Eickhorn) Smith. He married Lynda L. Barton on September 6, 1969, in Quincy and she survives.

He was a graduate of Quincy High School. Wayne served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was retired from his career as a foreman for the railroad. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.

In addition to his wife Lynda, survivors include their children: Julie (Joe) Jackman of Aurora, IL; Brian (Angela) Smith of St. Louis, MO. Five grandchildren, Jessica and Jeffrey Steeples, Micah, Benjamin and Luke Smith. Two great-grandsons, Emery and Jensen Weise. Nieces, nephews, one sister, and brother also survive. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.

Private graveside services are planned with inurnment in Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy. Memorials are suggested to the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis. Service arrangements are with Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Messages may be shared online at www.dukerandhaugh.com

    My brother Dick, and myself, delivered the Quincy Herald Whig newspapers in the 1960’s ! That is where we met “Smitty”! He was always a great friend ! Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss !

    Very sorry to hear about Wayne. He and Lynda were like parents to me. I have wonderful memories with him. He was one of the best men I have known.

    Wayne and Lynda were always like an extra set of grandparents to me and my brother. Most of my memories of special events growing up include both of them. Thinking of you all during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.
