Shane C. McDermott

Shane McDermott, age 56, of Quincy, IL, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital. He was born on April 1, 1969 in Denver, Colorado. He married Jennifer Darnell on April 17, 2004 in Quincy. She survives. Shane was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.

A dedicated entrepreneur and community member, Shane was the owner of McDermott Enterprises LLC, Mid-West GIS, and Mapping the Outdoors. He began his GIS career in Texas with Mapsco and Geo-Info Ltd., where he developed the skills and experience that would guide his professional path. After moving to Quincy, he worked for several years at PSBA. Shane earned his business degree from Quincy University, graduating with high honors in the Class of 2007.

In addition to his work in GIS and mapping, Shane was a driven businessman who managed and renovated numerous rental properties over the years. He took great pride in improving homes and investing in the local community through his work in property management and renovation.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Shane was deeply committed to serving others. He founded Kid’s Second Chance and generously gave his time as a substitute teacher, a mentor and volunteer for multiple school organizations. He was an active supporter of Boy Scouts of America Troop 22 and was involved with Quincy Catholic Charities, always seeking ways to strengthen his community.

Family and friends were the center of his life. He loved spending time with his family and traveling, especially anywhere that included a warm beach. He enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, trap shooting, fishing, hunting, boating, coin collecting, cooking, card playing and sharing a beer with friends. He also loved spending time with his loyal dog Blessing. One of his greatest joys was watching his children participate in their activities.

A passionate sports fan, Shane loved cheering on the St. Louis Blues in hockey, the St. Louis Cardinals in baseball, the North Carolina Tar Heels in basketball, and—most of all—the Dallas Cowboys in football.

A man of strong faith, Shane attended St. Francis Solanus Church in Quincy and was a member in the St. Francis men’s fraternity. He was also a member of the Quincy Cursillo community and a proud supporter of Quincy Notre Dame.

He had a deep love for his country and took a passionate interest in American politics and civic life.

Shane will be remembered for his generosity, his devotion to family, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his deep commitment to his faith and community. His passing will leave a void in the hearts (and stomachs) of his family, his friends, and countless others whose lives were touched by his amazing outreach.

He is survived by his wife Jennifer, son Christopher McDermott, and daughter Courtney McDermott. Siblings: Dave McDermott (Teresa) and Brandy Rogers (Mark). Father and mother-in-law, Gary and Carol Darnell. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Tina Darnell, Suzie Morenzoni (Chuck), Sam Darnell, and Joe Darnell (Alexis). Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father Ken McDermott, and his mother Dee Averillo, brother Brad McDermott, a nephew Josh McDermott, and a sister-in-law Shay Darnell.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame High School or St. Francis Catholic Church.
