Ruth S. “Ruthie” Schmelzle

Ruth S. “Ruthie” Schmelzle, age 88, of Quincy, died on Friday, April 11, 2025 at Blessing Hospital. She was born on May 18, 1936, in Quincy, the daughter of Henry Geschwandner and Regina (Frankenhoff) Geschwandner. She married Norman A. “Norm” Schmelzle on January 21, 1961, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on December 15, 2021.
Ruthie was a 1954 graduate of Quincy High School. Prior to marriage, she was employed at Pfieffer’s market, and at Woolworth. Ruthie was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She loved nature and was especially fond of passion flowers. She happily shared her knowledge with the students at St. Peter’s school by telling the story of Jesus and the flower. She also liked hummingbirds and tending to her garden. Ruth and Norm enjoyed going on camping trips, having traveled to Colorado, Branson, MO, and Argyle State Park, IL.
Ruthie is survived by her sister Mary Kemner, a brother, Don (Robin) Geschwandner; and a sister-in-law Mary Geschwandner.
Nieces and nephews: Leslie Geschwandner; Barb (Tom) Huber, Kelly Walker, Rhonda Geschwandner, Ann (Rich) Lentz, Donna (Jim) Woods and Scott Geschwandner.
A niece-in-law (Tom’s wife): Lori Geschwandner.
Great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives also survive.
In addition to her husband, Ruthie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Carl Geschwandner and his wife Dorothy, and Ken Geschwandner, a nephew Tom Geschwandner, sister-in-law Joyce Geschwandner, and brother-in-law Jerry Kemner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation at St. Anthony Church on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church or Masses may be given in her memory.
