Rory E. Holder

Rory E. Holder, age 64, of Quincy, died on December 25, 2023. He was born on February 1, 1959 in Quincy, the son of Paul and Ella (Green) Holder.

Rory, lovingly known to family and friends as “Rody” or “RoRo”, was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois. He was a cherished member of the community and proud of where he came from. Rory always had a strong presence wherever he went. As a young man he was extremely athletic, growing up running track and playing football. His love of fitness grew as he competed in bodybuilding competitions in his 20’s. He was successful in anything he dedicated his time to. He was very active and had numerous hobbies. He had a passion for riding motorcycles and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. You could often find him fishing or relaxing in the pool with a drink in his hand. You could hear him singing country music often while behind the grill. One of his top priorities was taking meticulous care of the people he loved most. Rory was someone you couldn’t help but notice. His large stature and handsome face were unmistakable- his infectious smile and genuine laugh were adored by all. He was an incredible father and his eyes always lit up when he talked about Sommer. He was so proud of her and she was without a doubt the light of his life. Rory was known for his big heart, witty comments, and colorful words. One of his greatest joys was his life with Annette. His adoration for her was evident and they were always laughing. One of his favorite things to do was go on vacation together or with their family. He was a well respected and loved employee at JM Huber for 30 years. He considered his coworkers his family and took great pride in his career. We are forever thankful for the years we got to love this great man. He will live on in our hearts and memories forever.

Rest in peace my friend, I will miss you walking into my office and hearing “how you doing Mikey”. My last memory of you will always be the fun time you Annette, my wife and I had with you at the Christmas party. Miners are a unique group, with bonds that are hard to explain, you have left a legacy of your hard work and dedication in all of the young miners that you have trained and molded. Love and miss you Buddy!

Annette , so sorry for your loss . Loosing a loved one is the toughest part of life we all encounter sometimes in our life – try to imagine what a wonderful smile he has now bigger than before , dancing, running & being side by side with the “Big Guy” who also will is there for you helping you thru this horrible pain – reach for Him now – He is listening, He never will forsaken you, just have faith in Him , let Him guide you thru this storm .

Annette – so sorry to learn of Rory’s passing….i remember meeting him at a BH HR function and was taken aback at how genuinely friendly and happy he was. He had such a beautiful smile that appeared to radiate through him….even though this was the first time meeting him, he made me feel as if we’d known him for years. May God give you strength and comfort during this time of grief

I met Rory when he started working for JM Huber I was in another department
In 2007 I transferred to the mine occasionally I would help him on the other crew then the last 6 months of my career I worked under his leadership he would always say “Mornin Frank and Beans” write my name on the black board for location and never asked more of me than I could do and if we had a big spill he could shovel 3 to 1 better because he was in great shape
He worked safe and made sure we were safe as John Wayne would say he cared
Late in my days there Summer became me neighbor on Cherry street and I could tell she was raised right to believe in herself

Wow don’t know what to say what a soul-shock! I remember Rody used to drive this car way way back in a day that said Snake on the side! We also worked together at Sheller-Globe in Quincy & he was a hoot! One day he started whistling the theme from the Andy Griffith show & got several others across the factory to join in! Another time he & some others were throwing these tiny metal clips catching each other off guard & laughing…they got called in the office over it & when the foreman asked Rody why they were doing it he told him it was his (the foreman’s) fault for not giving him enough work to do causing him to get bored…the foreman laughed & said he would try to do better! I never heard him complain or get mad just flashed his smile for everyone…
Sincere condolences to his family…I used to work with his mother, Ella, at Davis-Cleaver & sister, Qualla, at Walmart – just a nice family!
His physical presence is missing yet his spirit soul will remain forever…how sad for the rest of the world who had yet to meet him!
