Robert ‘Bob’ Scott

Robert K. “Bob” Scott, age 78, of Quincy, IL, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on May 12, 1946, in Quincy, a son to Albert R. and Mary G. (Forrester) Scott. He was a 1964 Quincy High School Graduate and a graduate of Western Illinois University. Bob served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He married Janice Siwek on January 10, 1970. She survives.

“Bobby” attended Highland Riverside Elementary School. He grew up enjoying roller skating at the family business, Scouts, and spending time on the Mississippi River water skiing. After years of hard work, he became an Eagle Scout, and a Vigil Honor Member with the Order of the Arrow. He spent years working on staff at Camp Saukenauk, a place he genuinely loved. Years later he would enjoy being a Scoutmaster for Jeff’s troop and watching him follow the same path.
While serving a 2-year tour with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he became Platoon Sergeant, and he was honorably discharged in 1966 with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Meeting for the first time on a blind date with two of their best friends, Bob and Jan had a great time, then he went off to war. Two years later when he returned, they met at a local night spot on 36th & State called “The Barn.” It was the beginning of a 55-year relationship.
After graduating from WIU, he worked for the family businesses his father “Scottie” founded. In the beginning, the primary business was digging basements and installing septic systems while also working the infamous “Scotties Potties.” He spent weekends roller skating at the tent on north 12th street.
In 1975 Quincy Raceways opened east of town. Shortly after that the new Skateland skating rink was built. He ran both family businesses with his father, mother, and wife Jan. Over the next 30 years, they worked tirelessly to maintain both operations. For generations families would create lifetime memories at the rink and racetrack.
After selling the racetrack to focus on the skating rink, son Jeff joined the family business. Soon Scotties Fun Spot was born and is now a family destination for generations both past and present. The Scott family has the title of the “longest family-owned skating rink in the country,” currently at 89 years.
In his spare time Bob helped form the Avenue of Lights. Together with his daughter Becky, they would hunt for the perfect Christmas pictures that would make magical memories for families to enjoy. They traveled to several venues where he enjoyed teaching classes on how to build displays. He would spend his summers building new displays and his winters in the park setting them up. One of his proudest creations was the mobile Roller Skating Caterpillar, which can be seen at Scotties Fun Spot.
He loved spending time with his grandkids whether it was attending dance recitals, watching them race, or just going on bike rides with them. He enjoyed teaching them every piece of knowledge he could.
In his later years, while attending go-kart races with his son and grandkids, he took a liking to 4 cycle engine technical inspections. He became one of the leading national inspectors, traveling all over the country and to Canada. He worked closely with Becky to help make the procedures simple and he had a core group of friends that he worked with and absolutely loved spending time with them.
Over the years his hobbies including racing go karts at the family dirt track. He loved playing roller hockey and played until the age of 60 when his body told him it was time to retire. In 1996 he and son Jeff won 3rd place at the National Roller Hockey tournament.
Bob was a jack of all trades; he could fix anything and always offered a helping hand to anyone that needed it. He was especially good at taking things apart to see how they worked, even if that meant they were never going back together.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children: Jeff (Rachel) Scott and Becky (Brad Hudson) Scott. Grandchildren: Avery Scott, Riley Scott, Kayla (Dylan Rogers) Allen, Kortney (Lance VanZandt) Goehl, Kearstyn Scott.
Step Grandchildren Lucas LeClair, Shane LeClair, Bradley (Dani) Hudson, Landon Hudson, and Sydney Hudson.
Great-Grandchildren: Damian and Wrenley
Step-Great-Grandchildren: Jude, Lyle and Erin
A Sister: Mary Ann (Ed) Horton and a sister in law: Ruth Ann ‘Tootie’ Scott.
A Fur baby: Duchess
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Bob was preceded in death by: his parents, brothers: Albert Scott, Jr. and Raymond Scott in childhood.

Bob will definitely be missed. He was a bonus dad to so many of us in the 1980’s who practically lived at the rink. We will always cherish the memories that we made with you. Jan, Jeff, and Becky, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Many memories at Scotties with Bob, Jan, Becky and Jeff. Remember from the age of 13 to 55. All night skate, speed skates, regular skating, birthday parties, hockey and the penalty bench (lol) . Great memories flooding my mind. So sorry for your loss. Bob was a great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Such a great man. It won’t be the same not seeing him around Scotties Fun Spot. I spent many Friday nights at the skateland and Sundays at the race track, hearing of Bob’s passing is like hearing of an iconic figure from your childhood passing.

My sincere condolences to the family on the loss of Bob. I had many memorable experiences with Bob in the Order of the Arrow and at Explorer Post 107, as well with Albert. He would pick us up in his old Plymouth, to go to functions and meetings, and guide us as we grew up. We looked up to him like an older brother, on our scouting trips and enjoyed the river camp in the summer (except all the mussels you stepped on). I did get to see him several times in the 70’s as well as the Fun spot 5 years ago or so, he was the same ol” Bob. A big smile on his face and glad to see you. A piece of my youth has died, Rest in Peace my friend.

Jeff and family. So very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. The roller skating community will certainly miss him. He was the first person to offer advice and show genuine kindness to a me as a new rink operator at a meeting 20+ years ago!

What an amazing man. Bob appreciated his family & friends more than anything else. Family Scott…..you won’t be able to spend the rest of your life with him, but he had the opportunity to spend the rest of his life with you. There is not a better gift you could have shared.

    He will be missed.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Bob. I had so much fun skating every weekend at the old rink and the new one as well. Was such a joy to get to know the entire family. So glad they kept it going and it’s growing as well. Thoughts and prayers are with family through this difficult time but knowing how much joy was brought to us all should bring a smile to your face.

Lots of fond memories of Bob. Always so laid back with that little smirk on his face as he looked over his reading glasses, shaking his head at us kids! Sorry for your loss to Beckey and the rest of the family. Bob was one of the best babysitters Quincy will ever have.

    Jan, Jeff and Becky
Bob will be missed greatly by our family. The Scott family has been a big part of our family for as long as I can remember. My Mother skated at the tent location when she was a young girl and brought all six of us as children. I brought my children and they have brought theirs and now we are at the current generation with my great grand daughter. She has been skating since she was big enough to walk. As you know I helped out at the rink as floor guard and worked at Quincy Raceways in the beer bar. These are memories I will always cherish. My grand daughter, Morgan works at the rink part time and enjoys it very much. From my family to yours, our love and deepest condolences

Bob was foremost among the great circle of friends in the Boy Scouts in the 1960s. We had wonderful experiences during summers at Saukenauk, times in Post 107, hiking the New Mexico mountains at Philmont, among other things. They were great times to grow up. Bob was a great and reliable friend, always willing to help, always positive and just fun to be around. Remembering him brings on a smile. Our sincere condolences to his family.

We are SO sorry to hear of Bob’s passing and the tremendous loss of the energy and tireless work he devoted to our community!! Always in the background making things happen and never asking for any recognition. He was SO very proud of his children and smiled from ear to ear when they were “doing their thing” while dancing or racing! He truly helped us bring fun and memories to all of our music students each year helping us make our skating parties an annual tradition! The Lord Bless & Keep You Mr. Scott!! Thank you for everything!! 💙💙🎶

Bob was a quick learner, Albert Scout was a natural businessman
Bob had more irons in the fire than you’d think. I remember learning Speed Skating for him going to speed skating meets like Kirksville Mo. he made you feel like you were the most important person. He’s shared his time with everybody. I learn a lot from my 1 on 1 with him
