Margaret Arlene Schlepphorst

Margaret Arlene Schlepphorst of Quincy passed away peacefully after a sudden illness at the Granite VNA Hospice House in Concord, NH on September 13, 2023 with her family at her bedside.

Margaret was born November 20, 1932 on the family farm in Edina, MO to Leslie and Virginia Howerton Klote. Following high school, she attended college at what was then known as Northeast Missouri State Teachers College.

She married Lawrence “Larry” James Schlepphorst on May 16, 1953 in Edina, Missouri and lived in a number of places as the Air Force moved the couple. Upon Larry’s retirement from the Air Force they settled in Quincy, IL in 1968. Margaret worked many years for Quincy Newspapers, Inc. now called Quincy Media. She was a long term member of the Church of St. Peter in Quincy.

The second of five children, she grew up loving the outdoors, climbing trees and roaming the woods and fields of northeastern Missouri. This love of fresh air and sunshine continued into adulthood as she planted and tended her gardens. Sports were important to her and she played basketball and softball in high school. She was a lifelong baseball fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, a passion she shared with her father and passed on to her son Eric. She rarely, if ever, missed any of his games from little league to high school football and baseball.

Margaret loved spending time with her family, which grew to include two grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their children. She especially cherished several trips to Europe with Larry, her son Eric Schlepphorst, daughter-in-law Nancy Emery and her grandchildren, Laura Schlepphorst Letarte and Sam Schlepphorst.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Larry Schlepphorst, her brother Jerry Klote and sister Charlene St. Aubin. She is survived by her son Eric Schlepphorst, and his wife Nancy Emery of Hopkinton, NH, her granddaughter Laura Schlepphorst Letarte and her husband Reid Letarte and great granddaughters Clara Aleta and Mabel Lea Letarte all of Sandwich, NH and grandson Samuel Schlepphorst and his wife Kathryn Helterline of Placerville, CO, brother William Klote and sister Ann Cox and her husband Ron Cox all of Columbia, MO.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Edina, MO on Monday at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorials are suggested to Chaddock of Quincy or to the Granite VNA Hospice House of Concord, NH.
