Macklin L. Meyer, age 80, of Quincy, died on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 11, 1946, in Quincy, the son of Leo T. and Mona June (Bence) Meyer. He married Marilyn Meier on April 12, 1969, she survives.

He was of the Catholic faith and a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.

Macklin was a Class of 1964 Christian Brothers High School graduate and furthered his education at Quincy College, graduating in 1968. He then received his master’s degree from Western Illinois University in 1973. He was drafted in the United States Army and served his country from 1970-1972 as a member of the Military Police.
He enjoyed playing basketball in high school and continued his passion for basketball by coaching while also teaching at Camp Point until 1990. Macklin then began teaching for the Quincy Public School system and continued coaching until 2004 when he retired. Mack had a strong love for sports and won 2 State Girls Basketball Championships while coaching and teaching at Quincy Junior High School. During his time at QJHS, he initiated their first cross-country team.

Macklin enjoyed traveling to Minnesota to fish for walleye. A talented woodworker, he crafted many items for family and friends. He also enjoyed playing tennis and winning tournaments with his doubles partner, Jim Wilper. Above all, Macklin cherished time with his family, especially the visits to his brother’s farm with his four grandchildren. He never missed any of their events.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children: Jennifer Nell Steel (Cody) and Andrew Meyer (Natalie) both of Quincy.
Grandchildren: Lyla and Leo Meyer; Aubrey and Bode Steel.
Siblings: Bill Meyer (Laverne) and Ed Meyer (Cheryl).
Brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter Sophie June Steel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church. Inurnment in Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Macklin’s grandchildren’s education in care of Jennifer Steel or Andrew Meyer. Service arrangements are with the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
