Joan Dee Zeiger

Joan Dee Zeiger (Davis) was born in Quincy IL at St. Mary’s hospital on June 23rd, 1956. Joan had 6 sisters and 3 brothers. All of their names began with the letter J. As a child she was baptized Catholic. Her schooling was St. Francis grade school & QHS. She loved playing sports, especially shortstop in softball and tennis. Joan was a traveler by nature. As a teenager she backpacked through Europe including Paris, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy.

Her travels also took her to Jamaica. She loved the music of Bob Marley. Joan lived in Buffalo, NY and Davenport, IA as a young adult before settling back in her hometown of Quincy.
She married Gary Zeiger on December 3rd, 1983. They had one daughter, Rachel. Whom she would call Ray.

Joan worked at York Street Thrift Shop for 10 years. She loved thrifting, hiking in the woods, camping, riding her Trek bike and the arts. She admired Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture. She took Rachel to his homes in Springfield IL and Chicago.

Other adventures of theirs included a California coastal cruise while Gary was still living, Disney World in FL & San Antonio TX. Viewing the play Grease at the Muny in STL was another highlight they enjoyed together.

Being informed was meaningful to Joan, she faithfully watched the news, preferably The Today Show or Sunday Morning. She read books and enjoyed People magazine. She still subscribed to Architectural Digest into her late adulthood. She loved ballet particularly Mikhail Baryshnikov and Misty Copeland. She was fond of movies and collected several VHS and DVDs.

Joan dearly loved her Mother Adelia and daughter Rachel. Joan went on to become a grandmother to Thomas and Adelia. She adored her grandchildren.

Joan passed away on June 11th, 2025. Her ashes were spread at The Hill of Three Crosses in Vilnius, Lithuania. She will be deeply missed and forever in the hearts of those who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her brother, James “Jimmy” Davis, her parents, Lelen and Adelia Davis, and her late husband, Gary Wayne Zeiger. She is survived by her daughter, Rachel Jane Zeiger, (Thomas Hiley III) and her 2 grandchildren, Thomas Raynard Hiley IV and Adelia Ray Hiley. Numerous nieces and nephews survived as well.

    I am sorry to learn of Joan’s death. I went to St Francis grade school with Joan. I always liked her and thought of her throughout the years. May Joan rest in peace. May God bring comfort and peace to all the family
