Jeanetta Green
Our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, Jeanetta Bernice (Hammond) Green, age 86, entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Good Samaritan Home of Quincy, IL.
Jeanetta was born on October 3, 1939 in Quincy, IL, the oldest daughter to Walter and Thelma Hammond. She grew up in Quincy, attended Quincy High School, and graduated in 1957. Soon after graduating she met the love of her life, John H. Green. The two married on July 9, 1960 in Bethel AME Church in Quincy, where they continued to make home and raise their family. The couple were married for 62 years before John’s death on October 10, 2022. To their union, three children were born. Jeanetta took pride in raising her children.
Jeanetta was the first female crossing guard in the Quincy Public School area. She soon after had a desire to continue her education. She graduated from Quincy College (now known as Quincy University) with Bachelor Degrees, double majoring in Special Education and Elementary Education. After working as a Para-Professional and Special Education teacher, she then earned her Masters Degree in Secondary School Counseling from Northeast Missouri State University (now known as Truman State University). After graduating she transitioned to serving as a guidance counselor for Quincy Senior High School until her retirement. Jeanetta was a passionate educator and was often referenced as “The Community’s Teacher”. She worked for Quincy Public Schools from 1977 to 2000. In 2023, she was recognized in the inaugural class of the Quincy High School Educator Hall of Fame.
Jeanetta served on numerous boards and community organizations. She was a member of the Quincy Branch of the NAACP, Martha K. Majors Club, and served on the board of trustees in multiple capacities for both John Wood Community College and Quincy University in addition to many more organizations. But most of all, she loved being a faithful servant for her church, Bethel AME. While she was a lifelong member, she served as the Superintendent of Sunday School, a steward, a member of the lay ministry, and sang tenor in the church choir.
When she wasn’t serving others in the community and work, she enjoyed cooking (in particular fried potatoes for breakfast), watching Bobby Flay on Food Network, talking on the phone with her sisters, supporting family at numerous events, writing poetry and shopping.
Jeanetta is survived by her son; Pastor Jeffrey (Rachel) Green of Quincy; daughter-in-law: Cassandra Green of Springfield, IL; seven grandchildren; Rodney Wynn of Inkster, MI; Gabrielle Green of Chicago, IL; Chanté and Kiera Green, both of Springfield, IL; Isabella Green of Quincy, IL; Shaonda (Ezra) Gavin, and Mikayla (Mortez) Valentine both of Peoria, IL; four great-grandchildren: Camryn, Kendyl, and Breyer Wynn; Zola Preston; sisters; Marguerite Johnson of Quincy, IL; Betty and Ruth Hammond of Los Angeles, CA; Thelma (Frank) Cooley of Rancho Cordova, CA; and Anna Coleman of Sacramento, CA; Sister- In-Law: Delores Hammers of Quincy, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Walter and Thelma Hammond; her husband, John H. Green; her brothers: Wesley and Boone Hammond; daughter, Judith Wynn and son, John R. Green.
She leaves behind family and friends who will forever cherish her memory, honor her example, and continue the values she instilled in them. While her presence will be missed, her love, lessons, and legacy will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
The Green family would like to thank Good Samaritan Home for their beautiful care of our loved one.

Rest in paradise Mrs.Green … You was always good to me.. you were my highschool counselor! Tremendous lady
I remember this dear lady. When I was a freshman in high school and she was a leader at Girl scout camp I was an aide. Then we met again when I was in college and she was in education classes with me. My mom worked at Sr high and talked positive about Jeanetta. Thanks for how you touch my life. God speed to take you home.
So very sorry for your loss, your Mother was a beautiful woman. Praying for all of you during this difficult time.

To the family,
Even though I didn’t have Mrs. Green I remember needing to talk to her a few times in Senior High. She tried to really work and help you through the hard or tuff things, not just things you would get in trouble for…. “If you know what I mean?!” May she rest in peace 🕊️
Prayers to the family.
To the Green family:
I am saddened to hear this news. While I was Superintendent of the Quincy Public Schools, I first met her. We were on various committees for the school district, but also the community. Jeannetta was so passionate about the causes she believed in, and for kids. I quickly learned to value, and trust her advice and opinion. She was a joy to work with. I will pray that God gives your family the strength you need in the days ahead, and that HE will fill your hearts with all of the great memories that you created, and shared with, her. God Bless
A stunning and blessed woman. Outspoken, firm in her commitment to fairness and opportunity for all, she was a devoted public servant in multiple offices, a counselor and a friend. She taught me much, opened my eyes to appreciate strong and dignified women, such as she was. She leaves a family and community richly cared for by her engagement. Many thanks, Jeanetta, and go with God.
Mrs Green was a God sent solider to the educational field, especially for us growing up as a black child in Quincy, Il. No matter what job title she held in the school system, you could count on Mrs Green to be there for you, to inform you, and to stand by you in times of misunderstanding’s with other students, and or faculties members. She was the GOD MOTHER of QUINCY PUBLIC SCHOOLs TO ME!
No one can replace her wisdom and Grace she exercised on all of us each and every day of her teaching career in the schools and in our community!
Her present will surely be missed on earth.
To the beloved family of Jeanetta Hammond Green, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray the sharing of wonderful past memories will offer comfort and peace and give you strength to endure in the days ahead. ♥️🙏🏽💛
Mrs. Green was my high school counselor. She taught me things about myself that I had never known. She truly loved her students and tried her best to make everyone feel important and loved. She and her husband, would later go on to buy the house I grew up in on Ohio Street. I was so grateful to know my childhood home would continue to be filled with love. She will sadly missed. Praying for peace and comfort for the family.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to you.
Incredible woman. So kind. So smart.

Family, I will always remember the Green family license plates…Blessed & Vry Blessed. I feel they were trying to tell us something. We were blessed with your warmth and kindness, now rest well thy good and faithful servant.
Praying God will comfort and care for each of you while you celebrate the legacy that lives on. Please know that you have our deepest sympathy. Olton & Linda Ingram
