Eugene R. “Gene” Jansen

Eugene R. “Gene” Jansen, age 86, of Quincy, died on September 29, 2025. He was born August 30, 1939 in Quincy, the son of Edmund and Frances (Hummel) Jansen. He married Elizabeth Ann Wegs on November 3, 1962, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling. She survives.

Gene was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and later St. Francis where he volunteered as an usher and an adult funeral mass server.

A 1957 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame, Gene proudly served in the U.S. Army for two years before continuing his commitment in the U.S. Army Reserves. A hardworking man, Gene was both a lifelong farmer and worked as a rural route carrier for the United States Postal Service for 30 years.

Gene was an avid member of the Quincy Bike Club, with a passion for cycling — so much so that he once logged over 5,000 miles in a single year. Adventurous by nature, he loved boating on the Mississippi River, spent years enjoying friendly competition in bowling leagues, and treasured countless evenings playing cards with friends. Gene and Elizabeth shared a love for travel, taking numerous cruises and family vacations together. Known for his light-hearted spirit and joyful personality, Gene had a warm sense of humor that brought big smiles to everyone around him.

In addition to his wife Elizabeth, Gene survivors include his daughters: Janice Link (Jeff) of Springfield, IL and Diane Kline (Bruce) of Hudson, OH. Grandchildren: Brandon Garnett (Tammy) of Orland Park, IL, Zachary Link of Springfield, IL, Katherine Kline of Cleveland, OH, and Ethan Kline of Hudson, OH. Two sisters-in-law: Helen Jansen of Quincy and Joyce Wegs of IN. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Edmund Jansen, Jr, Russell Jansen, and Marilyn Barry.
