Doris Marie Berter Angerer, age 88 of Quincy, Illinois died Saturday, September 19th, 2026 at her home. Doris was born January 7, 1938, in Leonard, Missouri to Elbert J. and Zelma (Greenstreet) Smith. She was of the Christian faith. Doris grew up on the family farm west of Leonard. She attended Grubb College, a one-room schoolhouse, for eight years. Doris graduated from Leonard High School at the top of her class, tied with a classmate. Doris lost the coin toss and was named salutatorian of her class. Doris married Theodore (Ted) Berter Jr. in 1957, and they had four children. Ted died May 1,1999. She married Albert P. Angerer in 2002 in Quincy. He died on January 6, 2018.

Doris was a wonderful homemaker while working full-time and raising four children. She was an excellent seamstress who made her young children’s clothing, numerous Barbie doll outfits, beautiful Care Bears for her grandchildren, dance costumes for a local dance studio, and bridesmaid dresses for weddings. Her children have fond memories of her homemade birthday cakes and her fried chicken and milk gravy. She had an artist’s eye for decorating, flower arrangements, and gardening.

In the early 1960’s Doris began working at Artcraft Company in Quincy. She bought the company in the 1990’s and served as its president until it closed in 2002.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brothers Doug Smith and Howard Smith, and best friends Viocra Wagy and Barbara Woodvine.

She is survived by her children Marie (Lee) John of Quincy, IL; Edwin Berter of Quincy, IL; Diana (John) Schwartz of Bloomingdale, NY; and Michael (Kathie) Berter of Quincy, IL. Stepchildren: David (Debbie) Angerer of Carbondale, IL; Gail Covalsky of Quincy, IL; Catherine Angerer (John Pieger) of Rockford, IL; and Mary Diaz of Bartlett, IL. Grandchildren: Jennifer (Roger) Klauser of Quincy, Il; Sara (Keith) Hershberger of Glenside, PA; Rebecca Schwartz of Potsdam, NY; Kale Taylor of Quincy, IL; Avery Berter; and Leah Berter of Quincy, IL.

Step-grandchildren Katie Case, Christian Covalsky, and Adam Covalsky of Quincy, IL; Keith Covalsky of Elburn, IL; Peter Kulig of Chicago, IL; Christine (Sam) Jensen of Elgin, IL; Rebecca Diaz of Bartlett, IL; Reyes (Tabitha) Diaz of Bentonville, AR; David Angerer Jr. of St, Louis, MO; Elaine (Dan) Ferguson of Maryville, MO; John (Leslie) Angerer of Edwardsville, IL; Bob (Aletha) Angerer of North Augusta, SC; and James (Briana) Angerer of New Orleans, LA.

Doris is also survived by great-grandchildren Kaylee and Samuel Klauser of Quincy, IL; Colden Schwartz, Huxley and River LaClair of Potsdam, NY; Lydia and Nora Hershberger of Glenside, PA; Aiden and Braxton Hamilton of Quincy, IL; Kian Taylor of Quincy, IL; and 19 step great-grandkids on the Angerer side of the family. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of the services at noon. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Quincy. Doris was an avid reader and lover of the theater. Therefore, memorials may be made to Quincy Public Library or Quincy Community Theater.
