Bernard “Bernie” D. VandenBoom

Bernard “Bernie” D. VandenBoom, age 85, of Quincy, died on March 30, 2026, at Blessing Hospital. He was born on August 19, 1940, in Quincy, the son of Alfred and Catherine (Genenbacher) Vandenboom. Bernie married Darla J. (Shear) Masters on February 16, 1990, in St. Francis Catholic Church. She survives.

He was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School. Bernie worked at AT&T in maintenance for 25 years prior to retirement. Bernie also worked in carpentry on the side and could often be found tinkering in the garage. Bernie was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Bernie was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Additionally, he served as President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles – Illinois State Aerie, which allowed him to travel and visit other clubs to raise money for various charities. Bernie was also a member of Rocky Point Club and the Knights of Columbus.

He was also a proud Chicago Cubs fan.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his two step-daughters: Marla (Calvin) Stinnett and Mariann (Glen) Wheeler, both of Quincy. Six grandchildren: C.J. (Stephanie) Stinnett of Hannibal, MO, Brandy (Mike) Waterkotte of Quincy, Alex (Lacy) Stinnett of Quincy, Matthew (Sally) Cates of Bethel Park, PA, Zach Wheeler of Quincy, and Katie (Levi) Hills of Quincy; thirteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Bonnie Cook of Quincy. Two nieces and various other relatives also survive.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Cook.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or United Way. Service arrangements are with the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
