William Joseph “Bill” Bernzen

William Joseph “Bill” Bernzen, age 63, of Quincy, peacefully passed awayon Monday, October 22, 2018 in his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 17, 1955 in Quincy the son of George Walter and Elizabeth Louise (Bernhardt) Bernzen. Bill married Nancy R. McNett on April 29, 1978 in Quincy University Chapel. She survives.
Bill was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School in 1973 and Culver Stockton College in 1977. He began working summers while he was in school for the family business, Middendorf Brothers Lumber Company. In 1988, the business name changed to Bernzen Lumber Co., Inc., and Bill took over the reins of the company.
Bill was a people person who loved his job and enjoyed his customers and sales reps. He loved restoring old cars, and restored many. Among his favorite projects were a 1955 Chevy, 1969 Chevelle and several Corvettes. He loved attending the Branson car auctions. His second home was at Lake of the Ozarks, and he enjoyed spending the day in his boat on the water. Some of his fondest memories were entertaining family, friends and business associates at the Lake. Spending time with his family was always important to Bill. He treasured his three grandchildren, and his beloved bulldogs.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his children: Greg (Belynda) Bernzen and Kim (Matt) Beswick, all of Quincy; grandchildren: Coryn and Amaia Bernzen and Wyatt Beswick.
Cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rebecca “Becky” Bernzen and a granddaughter, Gracie Ann Beswick.
Thank you to UnityPoint Hospice and all who helped care for Bill. They were simply amazing and really improved his quality of life when he needed it most.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family services will be planned at a later date.
