Walter F. “Walt” Venvertloh
Walter F. “Walt” Venvertloh, age 84, of Quincy died on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 9:43 a.m. in the Emergency Room of Blessing Hospital. Walt was born October 3, 1936 in Quincy, a son of William “Pete” and Hilda (Vonderheide) Venvertloh. He married Kathleen Marie Duesterhaus on October 7, 1961 in the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Kathleen survives.
Walt was a graduate of St. John’s Grade School and a 1954 Graduate of Quincy Notre Dame. He began his work career with Bergman Nursery during high school and continued until he began serving in the U.S Army Reserves for a short time. He then went to work for the Illinois State Highway Department, after which he became the proud owner of Venvertloh’s Landscaping. He was one of the hardest working men you would ever meet. Even when he no longer pushed the mower, he continued to show his passion by engaging in the business his son, Steve, now oversees.
Walt was a selfless husband, father, and grandfather. His top priority was his family. He cherished annual family vacations to the Lake of the Ozarks. He passionately supported his grandkids in their many activities through QHS, QND, QU, HLG, Quincy Community Theater as well as dance recitals. His constant presence will be missed.
A devout Catholic, Walt was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, currently a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church and previously a member of St. John Church. Walt also enjoyed time with his friends. He participated in bowling leagues. He was an astute card player and loved being dealt a good hand. Taking Senior Bus Trips with his wife Kathleen brought him great joy.
In addition to his wife Kathleen, survivors include his children: Sheila (Kent) Smith, Darlene (Tony) Butler, Steve (Wendy) Venvertloh, and Deanna (Justin) Twaddle. Grandchildren: Derek, Cody, and Mckinley Smith, Kelsey Butler, Zachary (Shannon) Venvertloh, Ethan and Carter Venvertloh, Stephanie (Reed) Plunkett, Lily, Caleigh, Abby and Isaac Twaddle. A great-grandson, Simon Plunkett. Brothers: Ralph Venvertloh, Gene (Margie) Venvertloh and Wilfred (Norma) Venvertloh; a sister-in-law Millie Venvertloh and many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Leonard Venvertloh; a sister in infancy, and a sister-in-law, Betty Venvertloh.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy Community Theater, and Masses may be given in his memory.
