Virginia “Gini” Louise Schnier passed away at the age of 98, on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021 in Quincy. Gini was born in Quincy on June 12, 1923, a daughter of Walter and Mary (Veile) Bufford.

Virginia Schnier lived a long life filled with love, family, and service. She and Edgar G. Schnier were married in 1947 and had three children. Throughout her life, Gini dedicated herself to her family and the community. Gini and Ed were instrumental in starting education for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Adams County. At the time, there were no educational options for students with intellectual disabilities. She also volunteered her time with St. Mary Hospital in the surgical waiting room for many years.

The church and her faith were foundational to her life. She was baptized at St. Francis Church, attended grade school at St. Francis School, and was married at the church. She attended church at St. Francis every Sunday until she became more homebound and then Communion was brought to her. She was an active participant in Cursillo, T.E.C., and Bible study.

Gini loved gardening and nature. Anyone who knew her would know how she tended diligently to her plants and flowers. You could point to any flower or bird, and Gini would know just what it was. Her yard was filled with flowers every Spring and Summer. She camped in Rocky Mountain National Park with her family, the same place she and Ed had their honeymoon. Gini was even able to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in her 80s to attend her grandson’s wedding.

Just as she loved and cultivated life in her garden, Gini did so with her family. Gini had four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She adored spending time with them, like with her annual Easter egg hunt around the yard. Even at 98 years old, she enjoyed their visits and seeing pictures of them.

Gini’s age did not define her. She did water aerobics at the YMCA until she was ninety years old. She kept her hair dyed bright red, just how she liked it. She loved chocolate chip cookies and Nutty Bars. She was a reader and read her favorite mysteries and westerns up until her final days. She was known by many as “Grandma Gini” because she treated so many like her own family.

Gini is survived by her three children: Carol Jean Schnier and husband, Carl Bolstead, Terri and John Badamo, and Danny Schnier; her brother and sister, Carol White, and Russel Bufford; her grandchildren, Sarah and Matt Mueller, Michael and Ashley Badamo, Matthew Badamo, and Anna Badamo; her great-grandchildren, Hannah Mueller, Wyatt Mueller, Morgan Mueller, Olivia Badamo, and Edison Badamo.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Bill (Laurine) Bufford.

A visitation will be held at St. Francis Church at 10am on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at St. Francis Church. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Gini loved to dress in bright colors, floral and nature prints. To honor her, we encourage those in attendance to wear the same.
