Viola C. “Vi” Pierce

Viola C. “Vi” Pierce, previously Vi Rees, age 72, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in the home of her son in Payson, IL. She was born on June 29, 1937 in Quincy, the daughter of Frank H. & Eleanor M. (Weidemann) Peters. Vi attended St. Francis School and Notre Dame High School where she graduated as a member of the National Honor Society. Vi was a member of the student council and participated in the band and orchestra and musical productions throughout her high school years. She also played the organ in St. Francis Church and sang for many weddings and other church celebrations. Vi continued with her music throughout her life. She was also active in the Quincy Service League and was Chairman of the first Holiday Gift Show in 1969. Vi also participated in the bridge marathon benefiting the Quincy Symphony Orchestra. She was president of the Women’s Golf Association twice and was a member of Westview Golf Course and Spring Lake Country Club. Vi had worked as a Real Estate agent and subsequently became the administrator for the Board of Realtors. In 1984, Vi moved to Texas where she worked as a legal assistant and ultimately as a court administrator in Collin County, McKinney, TX from which she retired.
In February 1958, Vi married William H. Rees. She later married Richard Slight. In December of 2002, Vi married Ronald L. Pierce and he survives. In March 2008, Vi and Ron moved from Texas to Greenville, Alabama. She continued playing the organ there at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Vi and Ron were full-time RV’ers and loved their travels and golfing. They especially loved seeing all their beloved children, grandchildren and friends throughout the country.

THREE CHILDREN; Katherine Kelly Ratliff and her husband Bobby of Quincy, Kevin Daniel Rees and his wife Esme of Payson, IL, and Robert Christopher Rees and his wife Sue of Ursa;
FIVE STEP-CHILDREN: Kay Peters and her husband Dean of Quincy; Karen Glosemeyer of Columbia, MO; Robert H. Pierce and his wife Therese of Aurora, CO; Patricia E. Dobson and her husband Craig of Allen, TX; and Sheila Phillips and her husband Tim of Yantis, TX;
FOUR GRANDCHILDREN: Brandon Rees, Cameron and Courtney Rees and Kelsey Rees;
STEP-GRANDCHILDREN: Dean Peters, Jr, Bethany Peters, Noble Peters, Landon Peters and Zane Glosemeyer, Bradley Pierce, Egan, Jacob, Leo and Renee Dobson, Lisa, Wade and Jack Phillips.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Vi was preceded in death by her father and one son William Curtis Rees.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Hospital of Memphis, TN or to the Caringbridge website.

    Ron- Just wanted to let you know that it was such an honor to meet both you and Vi. You are a very special couple and I can only imagine just how much you will miss her. Just remember to take care of yourself and always know that you took such great care of her. I will always consider myself blessed to have met Vi and will remember her always.     Ron,
    We are so, so sorry for your loss. We were shocked when we opened the newspaper this morning. Vi was always one of our favorites and we will miss her stopping by to see us. If you are ever in the area, please come by and see us. You and your family will be in our prayers.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Vi last year while her & Ron were in Denton, TX She was so friendly & fun to be around. We will miss her very much.

    Vi was a breath of fresh air, a friendly face in the machinery of justice when she worked in Collin County, Texas. She had a way of making everyone she came in contact with feel important. She had only friends and is deeply missed.
