Trena Jean Mason

Trena Jean Mason, age 58, of Barry IL, went to be with God on Sunday, February 28, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born on November 7, 1962 in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Donald Mason and Doris Jean (Irwin) Bowen.

Most recently, Trena was a cook for the Barry Public School System, and had previously worked at Stromer’s Grocery store, and other local stores and restaurants in the Barry area.

Trena was a beautiful person with a heart of gold. She had an exuberant light and infectious smile that could draw anyone toward her. She was so, very kind and the type of person who would gladly give her last dollar if she thought someone needed it more than her. She loved her family fiercely and unconditionally, especially her sons, for who she would do almost anything. Trena had many friends, who she thought of as family and loved just as much. Trena’s greatest hobbies were hanging out with family and friends on her time off, and her collection of dolphins and unicorns.

Shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, sadly Trena lost the love of her life, Lester Brown. His daughter remembers Trena fondly stating, “God gained one amazing angel. I don’t have enough kind words to describe her. She had a heart of gold and she loved our Dad with every bit of it. She took wonderful care of him and spent many sleepless nights with us while he was losing his own battle with cancer, all while she was fighting the same disease herself.”

If Trena could say anything to those of us grieving right now it would be: “I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun; Of happy memories that I leave when life is done. (Author Unknown).”

She is survived by: TWO SONS: John Franklin Myers (Christa) of Vandalia, MO and Dale Leroy Myers Jr. of Jacksonville, IL. SIBLINGS: Linda Young (Alan) of Harding, MO; Karen Ufkes of Macomb, IL; Lorena Hernandez; Donald Mason; Margaret Little (Shawn) and Loretta Thomas, all of Quincy, IL. Numerous loving nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

She was preceded in death by: her only grandchild, an angel-baby girl named Oakley Alexandra Myers, who she sadly never got to meet, an infant son, Terry Dean Myers; mother, Doris J. Bowen and step-father, Franklin T. Bowen.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Barry Baptist Church, 900 Main St., Barry, IL. A celebration meal will follow at the church with carry-in dishes welcomed. Donations can be made to Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and/or memorials can be made to the Illinois School of the Blind in Jacksonville, IL.
