Stephen John Stump
Stephen John Stump, age 70, of Quincy, died on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, IA after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was born on January 25, 1951 in Macomb, IL the son of Charles Laurel and Maureen Louise (Arnold) Stump. He married Sharon Ann Klues on June 16, 1978. She survives.
Mr. Stump was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Bowen West Point High School in 1969. He received his Associate’s Degree from Spoon River College in Canton, IL and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Quincy University. Stephen served in the United States Navy from 1972 until 1976 as a hospital corpsman. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Stephen was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was passionate about his faith and loved conversation. He derived profound joy through dedication to his ever growing family. He had a joyful, genial, and selfless nature that was loved and admired.
In addition to his wife, Stephen is also survived by:
SIX CHILDREN: Matthew C. Stump (Aleeza Granote) of St. Louis, MO; Rebecca C. Shinn (Ryan) of Quincy; Elizabeth C. Torres (Jose) of Bettendorf, IA; Peter A. Stump of Galesburg, IL; John D. Stumpf (Meghan) of Littleton, CO; and Brian A. Stump of New York, NY.
GRANDCHILDREN: Ariella and Mariah Granote; Dominic, Damian, and Danica Shinn; and Xavier, Rafael and Alessandra Torres.
SIBLINGS: Patrick Stump, James Stump (Denise); Theresa Ghafourian (Saeed) and Mark Stump.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Charles ‘Tony’ Stump.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 27, 2021 at 12:00 noon in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted by the US Navy Honor Detail and the American Legion Post #37. Visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Friday from 11:00 until the time of the services at noon. Memorials may be made to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Adams County Right to Life.

It’s impossible to pass by Ninth & Cedar and not think about Mr. Stump. He and his family were wonderful neighbors and the best paper carriers! I can’t remember an encounter with him that he didn’t have a smile on his face and a friendly word to share.

Growing up Steve was always the voice of calm peace and reasoning. One of the nicest most caring proud person I was blessed to know in my youth. Never a harsh word and always nice and kind and full of life. One of the greatest families I’ve ever known. I wish I could have talked to him more in my adult years especially since her was Navy. I know he was a hero to his family and friends but also a hero to the nation for his time in service. Thank you Steve for all the years of kindness. His calling you home is a blessing but very sad and hard for the family that loves you.

Sympathy to Steve’s family. Our family was close to the Stump Family back in the days when attending West Point Catholic Church. Coming to the Monnier Farm and hanging out with us was fun. Charlie and Maureen, Steve’s parents, were strong in their faith and even though I have not visited with the siblings, After all these years, I can believe Steve was a devoted Family man as well. May god give you peace and strength during this time.

Sharon, our hearts are with you and your family with the loss of Steve. As one of the younger cousins in the Arnold family, I always remember Steve’s gracious smile, laughter, and kind example for we littler ones. His call to my family when our dad passed brought all those memories back to me. It wasn’t a short chat; he took the time to share memories and bring comfort where possible. Visiting with both of you again at Amanda’s wedding a couple of years ago was an unexpected and timely gift. He was then as I had always remembered him.
