Stephen J. “Steve” Kathmann
Stephen J. “Steve” Kathmann, age 67, of 2031 Wilmar Dr, Quincy, died on Monday, September 14, 2015 at 1:10 AM in the Good Samaritan Home. Steve was born on April 21, 1948 in Quincy the son of Alphonse and Marjorie (VanHowten) Kathmann. He was a 1966 graduate of Christian Brothers High School and 1970 graduate of University of Missouri, Rolla. He married Ellen Stroot on August 6, 1976. She survives.
Steve worked as a mechanical engineer for Gardner Denver for many years and was a licensed Professional Engineer.
Steve was passionate about all things related to airplanes – he earned his private pilot’s license in his youth and for several years would fly to OshKosh’s Airventure. His career in engineering made him the ultimate problem solver and reigning math genius in the family. He also loved the musical styling of The Kingston Trio.
During his retirement, Steve enjoyed traveling across the country to visit his children and grandchildren and restoring an old farmhouse in Missouri. He rebuilt the engine of a 1946 CJ-2A Willy with his son one summer and became a connoisseur of bread pudding – Maid Rite’s was by far his favorite. Steve was a kind and gentle man who was incredibly devoted to his family.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: Christine Kathmann of Anchorage, Alaska, Rachel Botson and her husband John also of Anchorage, and Paul Kathmann and his wife Sarah of Atlanta, Georgia.
THREE GRANDCHILDREN: Piper Botson, Pearce Botson and Penn Kathmann.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

I am saddened to hear of Steve’s death. We were classmates at Christian Brothers. Steve was a quiet, gentle and thoughtful man as long as I knew him. He was near the top of our class in academic achievement – and indeed in his life. Steve, you will be missed by many!
