Sharon L. Holthaus
Sharon L. Holthaus age 86, of Quincy died on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home. Sharon was born in Quincy on May 8, 1936, a daughter of Frederick and Berniece (Hickey) McCaughey.
Sharon married Robert Schmelzle on August 25, 1956 in St. Boniface Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on August 15, 1982. She later married Gregory Holthaus on February 14, 1992 in the Chapel at Quincy College.Greg preceded her in death May 1, 2012.
Sharon had worked as a cartographer at Artcraft. She had also worked for the Answering Service and the Illinois Veteran’s Home.
She attended St. Peter and St. Rose elementary schools. She graduated from Notre Dame High School. In high school she was a cheerleader and very involved with school activities.
Sharon thrived talking with people, she was wonderfully kind and helpful; always ready to lend a helping hand.
She enjoyed golfing, gardening, dancing, and crocheting. She and her husband Greg loved traveling throughout the U.S. and to foreign destinations.
Sharon was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church before moving to the Illinois Veteran’s Home twelve years ago.
Survivors include her children, Robert (Justine Ozaki) Schmelzle of Seattle, WA; Kathy (Raymond) Rossmiller; Mark (Robin) Schmelzle; Susan (Bill) Sanders and Lisa (Dane) Barnes all of Quincy;
Lynn (Ryan) Ehmen of Springfield, IL and a stepdaughter, Gail (Lou) DeGreeff of Quincy.
Grandchildren:
Andy Schmelzle; Daniel Spohr; Tyler Spohr; Ryan Spohr; Rodney Evans; David Sanders; Danielle Sanders; A.J. Barnes; Halle Barnes; Peri Jane Ehmen; Bennett Ehmen; Rowan Ehmen; Josie Ehmen; Christina Adler and Angela Fisher.
12 Great- Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Bob and Greg. Siblings, Donna Schelich, Patricia Dorsey and Greg McCaughey.
Sharon’s family extends their gratitude for the excellent care she received throughout her years at the Veteran’s Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
Interment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Quincy Notre Dame High School, the Illinois Veteran’s Home Activities Fund, or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Sharon was one of our lead workers at the Vet’s Home. We both really enjoyed her she was smart, kind and funny. Family was important to her and she mentioned them often. Our sincere sympathies.
