Seldon R. Totsch

Seldon R. Totsch, age 88 of Liberty, IL died on Saturday, May 22, 2021 in his home. He was born on January 30, 1933 in Clayton, IL, the son of Frank & Elizabeth (Syrcle) Totsch. He married Mary Jane (Dunn) Ulry on May 26, 1973 in Hannibal, MO and she survives. They would have celebrated their 48th Anniversary on May 26, 2021. Seldon was a member of Spring Valley Church near Siloam Springs.

He was the McKee Township Road Commissioner for 42 years, retiring in 2016 at the age of 83. He spent many long hours maintaining the roads and dearly loved his job. He took pride in the preservation of his roads and improving the quality of the road equipment over the years. He built the original town hall many years ago and made sure that the Township was financially stable upon his retirement. In his earlier years, he ran for Secretary-Treasurer and Business Agent for Teamsters Local 21 and briefly worked for them as a Union Organizer and as a truck driver for Burlington Northern Trucklines for several years.

He was very civically minded and truly cared about serving his community. He was elected to serve on the Adams County Board in 1986 and was the longest-serving member until recently due to health issues. Until his illness, he had nearly perfect attendance. Seldon always made time to talk to his constituents about their concerns and was well respected for his voting record. He always stayed true to his character and was not afraid to stand up for his beliefs and voice his opinions. You may not have liked them, but you always knew where you stood with him. He also served on the Liberty School Board for 12 years and was the former president of Fairview Cemetery. He was a member of the State Board of Township Officials, Two Rivers Resource Conservation and Development, Twin Oaks and Eagles Club.

Seldon was also a devoted family man and upon his marriage to Mary Jane, they became a blended family. In addition to his loving wife, he is also survived by three sons, Randy Totsch (Linda) of Colorado, Chris Johnson of Quincy, Illinois and Troy Ulry (Dawn) of Springfield, Illinois; three daughters, Robin VanVelzer (Randy) and Carolyn Johnson both of Quincy, Illinois and Lisa Reich (Dirk) of Liberty, Illinois; grandchildren, Robbie Totsch, Michael Totsch, Michelle Reardon, Jason Totsch, Tyler Totsch, Aubrey Totsch, Christy Utterback, Thane Johnson, Chase Johnson, Heath Totsch, Shana Clarkson, Travis Dierker, Brandon Thomas, Niki St. Hill and Kendell Farr; one sister, Esther Hendricks; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Totsch was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Seldon Roy Totsch, Jr., John Totsch and Donnie Totsch; a grandson Todd Dierker; and two brothers, Harold Totsch and Marvin Totsch; and two sisters, Margie Johnson and Ruth Graham.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Interment in Fairview Cemetery near Siloam Springs. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Fairview Cemetery Association.
