Ruth (Scheresky) Barnhart, PhD, age 83, of the Good Samaritan Home died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in the Home. She was born on September 27, 1934 at the family home in Max, ND. She was the daughter of Joseph J. & Dorothy M. (Dassenko) Scheresky. She married Miles Richard Barnhart on February 17, 1979 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Quincy Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was a member of both the Michigan Education Association and the Iowa Education Association.

Dr. Barnhart was an accomplished Teacher and Educator. While teaching Kindergarten, First grade in Barry County, MI. area schools, including Title One Reading, she pursued her BS and MA Degrees from WMU. Dr. Barnhart received an “Outstanding Young Educator Award during her career at the Hastings Public Schools. After 18 years, in 1973 she took two years off and received her Doctorate in Education from Michigan State University, graduating in 1975. In 1975 Dr. Barnhart began her Career as Professor of Education at Iowa State University, Ames, IA.

During that time she authored several publications. She made presentations in foreign countries including, England, China and Peru. In 1983 she observed ISU student teachers in the International Schools and presented a lecture at London University. She presented lectures at several ACEI and ASCD Conferences throughout the United States. In 1988, she took a Sabbatical to China and lectured 6 weeks. In 1982 Dr. Barnhart received the “Outstanding Teacher Award” from Iowa State University. After retiring in 1991, Dr. Barnhart and her husband Miles decided to make a move to Scottsdale, AZ where they lived for 20 years. During this time she authored two books, . From the Steppes to the Badlands, and A Country Girl. They continued traveling visiting countries in all 7 continents and, over a total of over 40 countries. Included was a trip to the Ukraine in 2002 and South America, and South America in 2006. They returned to the Midwest choosing Quincy as their new home in 2007.
Her hobbies included reading, needlework, traveling and writing.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was also preceded in death by her brother, Alvin Scheresky, nephews Jon Scheresky and Glen Scheresky. A Step grandsons, Conner Brady and Daniel Barford.

Funeral services for Ruth Barnhart will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Interment in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
