Ronald K. “Ron” Sparks

Ronald K. “Ron” Sparks, age 62, of 3621 Biscayne, formerly of 307 Maple, Quincy, died on Thursday, January 19, 2012 in Blessing Hospital. He was born November 7, 1949 in Quincy, a son of Kenneth D. and Phyllis (Wood) Sparks. He married Rita Veile on November 23, 1968 in St. Francis Catholic Church and she survives.

Ron worked for the City of Quincy as Assistant Director of Transit Operations for several years, retiring in 2003. He had served the city as First Ward Alderman and he was a past member of the Adams County Board. Ron also served on the Sheriff’s Committee.
He was a member of the VFW, the Rocky Point Democratic Club and a long-time member of the North Side Boat Club.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
Ron served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, from 1969-1971.

Ron was known for his generosity, sense of humor and quick wit. He was outgoing and had the ability to lift your spirits. These attributes were shown as he often helped coordinate events to benefit those in need.

In addition to his wife, Rita, he is survived by his mother, Phyllis J. Sparks of Quincy; three children, Richard Sparks and his wife, Pennie, Robert Sparks and Rochelle Sparks, all of Quincy; four grandchildren, Jordin and Kaylea Sparks of Quincy and Tanner and Conner Sparks, of Camp Point; brothers, David (Connie) Sparks of Quincy and Gary (Sherry) Sparks of Fowler, IL. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Cheryl Lummer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Blessing Foundation for Hospice or St. Francis Catholic Church.

    Dave & I both went to school with Ronnie, myself since Kindergarten. He was a nice guy and I remember his blonde hair and his big smile. He was everyone’s friend. We are so sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
