Roger J. “R.J.” Boone
Roger “R.J.” Joseph Boone, age 65, of Plainville, IL, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024 in his home. He was born June 11, 1958, in Quincy, a son to Roger K. and Rosalyn (Ehrhardt) Boone.
R.J. graduated from Payson High School in 1976. He married Marilyn L. O’Brien on September 9, 1989, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Quincy, IL and she survives.
R.J. founded Boone Builders he was meticulous in his work and was proud of each of his projects. Later, he went on to create Boone Hunting. He, along with his wife and children, managed a hunting preserve raising pheasant and quail and hosting bird hunters for twenty years. He met numerous people and cherished the memories that were made. The last few years he enjoyed guiding hunts at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge in Pike County, Illinois.
In addition to staying busy with work, he found time to be dedicated volunteer fireman with the Payson/Fall Creek Fire Department. R.J. attained the rank of Assistant Chief before retiring after forty years and retired June of 2022.
In 2021, R.J. and Marilyn were the proud recipients of the Payson Community Builders Award. He and his wife Marilyn were members of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Quincy, IL, where they served both as greeters and communion ministers. R.J. also served on St. Anthony Men’s Society and on the finance committee.
R.J. was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, listening to every game on the radio. R.J. enjoyed raising his Vizsla birddogs, frying fish at St. Anthony and chicken at the Old Settlers Picnic. He also enjoyed planting a large garden and sharing the produce with friends and family. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Marilyn, R.J. is survived by his mother, Rosalyn Boone of Plainville.
Children: Daniel Boone, of Plainville, IL; Rachel Berry (Dalton), of Perry, MO; and Ryan Boone (Sarah Duesterhaus) of Mendon, IL.
Siblings: Raymond Boone (Kim), of Coatsburg, IL and Rose Lugering (Dana), of Quincy, IL.
Grandchildren: Lawson, Vivian, and Eleanor Berry; and Audrey Tuafo and Ryker Boone.
Many in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father Roger, and his father-in-law and mother in-law, Lawrence and Patricia O’Brien.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Interment will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Plainville, IL. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Service arrangements are with Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony Church Men’s Society, Shiloh Cemetery, or Payson/Fall Creek Fire Department.
