Robert L. Giesing
Robert L. Giesing, age 84, of 4014 Pine Ridge Drive, died on July 12, 2011 in Blessing Hospital. He was born October 10, 1926 in Quincy, a son of Robert A. and Leona C. (Benhoff) Giesing. He married Mary K. Derhake on April 3, 1948 in St. Francis Catholic Church Rectory. She survives.
Robert was employed for twenty-nine years in construction & repair with Illinois Bell Telephone Company. He retired in 1982. While with the company, Bob received their Vail Award for saving the life of a man drowning in the Mississippi River.
Robert served in the Navy during both WWII and the Korean War.
Bob immensely enjoyed boating and woodworking. Robert was also a member of the Quincy Boat Club, South Side Boat Club, the Island Club, the Elks and Knight’s of Columbus.
He is survived by a son, Gregory A. Giesing and his wife Mildred of Petersburg, TN; four brothers, William Giesing and Don Giesing of Quincy, Richard Giesing and his wife Mary Margaret of Springfield, IL, and John Giesing and his wife Terry of Crystal Lake, IL; one sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Novelli and her husband Frank of Melrose Park, IL. Numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maureen Giesing.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 9:30 A.M. in Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 8:30 – 9:30 A.M. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church or to the Blessing Cancer Center.
