Robert “Bob” George Hessling
Robert “Bob” George Hessling age 87, of Quincy died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 12:13 p.m. in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital. Bob was born September 12, 1928 in Quincy, a son of Frank and Alvera (Winking) Hessling. He married Clara Smith on April 7, 1951 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and she survives.
Bob worked for 35 years at Brower Manufacturing as foreman, and later as plant superintendent until the company closed. He went on to work at the Illinois Veteran’s Home until his retirement.
He was a graduate of St. John Grade School and attended Notre Dame High School until he left to join the U.S. Navy. Bob served his country during World War II from 1946-1948.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Bob was also a member of Twin Oaks Club, Southside and Northside Boat Clubs and the American Legion Post #37. He loved playing baseball in his younger years on the former Industrial League, and he was an avid Cardinal Baseball fan. He loved to cook and he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed being on the river in his pontoon boat.
In addition to his wife Clara, survivors also include: his daughters, Joy Hessling; Debbi McColez and her husband Michael; and Vickie Wiegmann and her husband Ralph “Butch” all of Quincy; brothers, Richard Hessling and Thomas Hessling and his wife Betty and a sister, Frances Lucie all of Quincy. Six grandchildren, Tony McColez, Tim McColez and Thomas McColez and his wife Sarah; Angela Shelton and her husband Greg; Michelle Lish and her husband Evan and Skyler Wiegmann and his wife Jessica. Eleven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, James, Donald, Teddy and Joseph Hessling and sisters, Dolores Mackay and Phyllis Hessling.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American legion Post #37. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. So sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I took care of him for several years at the Reed Foot Clinic. I always enjoyed talking to him and hearing about what he was cooking up at the boat club. I know he will be missed. Deepest Sympathy to all the family.
