Rita M. Niemann

Rita Marie Niemann, 87, of 2416 South 24th Street, died on October 3, 2016 at her home. She was born April 25, 1929 in Quincy, IL, a daughter of Lawrence and Anna Jochem. She married Ferd E. Niemann, Jr. on July 25, 1953. He preceded her in death on October 22, 2006.
She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, attended St. Mary of the Woods College in Terra Haute, Indiana, and graduated from Quincy College. Rita was well-known in music circles as both a harpist and pianist, having given her graduation recital in harp in 1946 and graduation piano recital in 1947 from Notre Dame Conservatory. She loved teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren harp and piano.
Rita was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Rosary Altar Society and Sacred Heart League. She was a former member of the Quincy Symphony Board, Quincy Women’s Symphony Board, Notre Dame High School Board of Directors and QND Board of Directors. She was a volunteer tutor at the Redmon & Lee Center, and accompanist of Catholic Boys’ Chorus. In 1968 she co-founded the library at St. Mary’s School, which is still in existence today at Blessed Sacrament School.
Her greatest love in life was her Catholic faith, her family and her friends. She is survived by seven children: Ferd Niemann III and his wife Barb, Nick Niemann and his wife Ann Marie, Nan Wood and her husband John and Jill Stegeman and her husband Paul, Tom V. Niemann and his wife Meleia, Drew Niemann and his wife Terry, and Paul Niemann and his wife Melinda.; 21 grandchildren: Kailee Flesch and her husband Frank, Ferd Niemann IV and his wife Angela, Brett Niemann, Blake Niemann, and Lexi Niemann, Katie Foppe and her husband Patrick, Becky Marron and her husband Matt, Christine Foppe and her husband Paul, David Niemann, Lisa Niemann, and Tricia Niemann, Jennifer Wood, Jordan Wood and Johnny Wood, Stacey Lambert and her husband John, Devon Stegeman and his wife Erin, and Cory Stegeman and his wife Kristy, Tori Niemann, Tyler Niemann, Matt Niemann and his wife Tana and Tara Niemann and 23 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Rich Niemann, Sr. and his wife Connie and sister-in-law: Mary Shankland and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her husband, Rita was also preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Anna Jochem; two sisters: Sr. Anita Marie O.S.F. and Martha Penderghest; two brothers: Paul Jochem along with his wife Ruth and Maurice ‘Pepper’ Jochem along with his wife Mary Lou, brother-in-law: Jack Shankland, and sister-in-law: Catherine Johnson along with her husband James, Sr., She was also preceded in death by two sons in infancy: Thomas A. and Joseph.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 9:30 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy University or Blessed Sacrament Church. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    To the entire “Niemann” family:
    I was saddened to hear that your beloved Rita passed away. She truly was a Quincy “saint.’ The legacy she left as a person is remarkable. It continues to live through each of you. I will pray that HE gives you the strength you need in the days ahead. I will pray that HE fills your heart and mind with only good memories of time spent with Rita.

    Dear Niemann & Jochem Family’s, Rita lived her life with such grace sharing her many talants for all to enjoy. Music in Heaven has surely been enriched with her arrival.Her smile and kindness will never be forgotten.
