Rita K. Middendorf
Rita K. Middendorf, age 83, of Quincy died peacefully, holding her husband’s hand, and surrounded by family on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:40 AM in Sunset Nursing Home. She was born April 28, 1933 in Decatur, IL a daughter of Harold & Loretta (Boland) Keyes. She married her husband of 61 years, Carl A. Middendorf in Bremerhaven, Germany in the Burger Park Chapel on July 2, 1955. He survives.
Rita had worked at St. Peter Parish and as secretary at St. Mary’s Grade School until her retirement. She attended St. Teresa High School in Decatur, IL.
Rita was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. She enjoyed boating, going to their camp on the East Shute and having family get-togethers. Rita liked watching and hearing about her grandchildren’s activities. She had played in many bridge clubs, and bowling leagues. Rita was a friend to everyone, she was easy to talk to and she cared about people unconditionally.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her three children, Eric Middendorf of Evansville, IN; Curt Middendorf of Camdenton, MO and Marti (Fred, III) Kientzle of Quincy. Grandchildren, Erika (Zedic) Birchler; Brittany Middendorf; Derek, Mitchell, Curt and Leah Middendorf; Fred Henry “Freddie” (Emily) Kientzle, IV; Brandon (fiancée Trianna) Kientzle; Parker and Faith Kientzle. A great-grandson Fred Henry “Hank” Kientzle, V; 2 step-great grandchildren, William & Zoey Birchler. Her sisters, Betty Rice of Myrtle Beach, SC, Sharon (Larry) Lavery of Peoria, IL and Jim (Colleen) Keyes of Decatur, IL. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Barbara Galka and Ditsy Platzbecker, and a daughter-in-law, Suzette Middendorf.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Monsignor Michael Kuse. Entombment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be Monday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Memorials are suggested to the Quincy Branch of the Alzheimer’s Association or Blessed Sacrament School. Arrangements are with the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. www.dukerandhaugh.com
Marti, Kurt, Eric, Fred and Carl..our deepest sympathy goes out to all of you! Rita was a wonderful person and we were so lucky and grateful to have known her and you all!
I was sorry to hear of Rita’s passing. I always enjoyed talking with Rita and Carl when we met. May you be comforted by friends and family and held in God’s arms with Rita. I will be keeping you in prayer.
