Rita Farwell

Rita Farwell, age 87, of St. Vincent’s Home, formerly of 728 North 49th St. Quincy, died on Friday, June 18, 2010 at 6:30 a.m. in the Home. She was born on April 5, 1923 in Quincy, Illinois, a daughter of Ben & Mae (Peck) Weibring. She married Jack Farwell on August 31, 1946 in Quincy College Chapel. He survives.

Rita graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1941 & Gem City Business College in 1943.

She managed the proof department for the Illinois State Bank from 1943 until 1948. She was the office manager of Quincy Catholic Charities for over 20 years and had the honor of being named “Secretary of the Year” in 1972 by the Quincy Secretaries Club.

Rita was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

After their retirement, she and her husband enjoyed spending the winters in Fort Myers, Florida for 12 years. She enjoyed golfing, swimming, & collecting shells on the beaches.

In addition to her husband Jack, survivors include:
ONE SON: John Farwell and his wife Mary Kay of Quincy;
ONE DAUGHTER: Carol Gilliland and her husband Bill of Quincy;
TWO GRANDCHILDREN: Matt Farwell & his companion, Dr. Karen Straight of Hartville, WY, and Julie Stevens and her husband Bryan of West Point, IL;
ONE GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER: Grace Stevens;
ONE SISTER-IN-LAW: Stella Mae Weibring of Quincy;
NIECE & NEPHEW: Linda Morrison and her husband Brad of Quincy, & D.A. Weibring and his wife Kristy of Frisco, TX.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Helen Frese, and a brother, Don Weibring.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church by Father Don Knuffman. Interment will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday morning from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus T.V. Mass for Shut-Ins. Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

    Dear Jack, John and family,

    I was saddened to read about the death of Rita. We worked together in the WCU Bldg and had lunch together often. Rita will be missed. i’m sorry for your loss.
