Richard Shankland

Richard Shankland, age 81, died October 23, 2022 in his home in Flat Rock, NC surrounded by his family. Richard was born on February 16, 1941 in Quincy, IL the son of Richard D. & Mildred G. (Aalbers) Shankland. He and his wife, Daryl Burnett Shankland moved to Flat Rock, NC in January after many years of living in Sapphire, NC. Richard excelled in Public Health Services and received certification from East Tennessee State University in 1963. Dick retired as Director of Environmental Health Services of Adams Co. Health Department after 35 years of service. His passion for public health was foundational in developing food service managers certification programs. Over the years, Dick was very active in civic affairs and volunteered much of his time on numerous boards and commissions (including the Quincy Planning Commission) for the betterment of his hometown of Quincy and surrounding areas.

Beloved father and husband and a great fishing buddy to all, Dick spent his later years expanding his fishing skills by learning to fly fish in the streams of North Carolina. Like any good fisherman, he was a great storyteller and deliverer of a punch line. When not near the water, Dick enjoyed a good game of chess or cards. He was also active in the Boy Scouts helping his grandson Chandler achieve Eagle Scout. You could also find him on the dance floor when the tune was right. Above all, he treasured his family.

He is survived by his wife Daryl, his son, Gregory (Lynn) Shankland, daughters Katherine and Linda Shankland, stepsons, Dr. Carter (Anja) Freiburg, Conrad Freiburg, and a stepdaughter, Alison (Jim) Manahan. Grandchildren, Kourtni, Chandler, and Clarissa Shankland; Jessica Rayhel and Jacob Shankland; Isabelle and Gavin Freiburg, Ruby and Millie Manahan and great grandchildren, Isaiah Rayhel and Astoria Greene.
