Richard E. “Dick” Altgilbers

Richard E. “Dick” Altgilbers, age 85, of Quincy, died on Friday, October 17, 2014 in Tucson, AZ. He was born on January 18, 1929 in Quincy, a son of Ed & Carrie (Whelan) Altgilbers. He married Dorothy Becks on May 5, 1950 in St. Francis Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2008.

He graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School and from Harvard University. He worked for the railroad from 1945 – 1985. His positions included attorney for the railroad and Assistant VP in Charge of Sales for Burlington Northern. He also was a Realtor. In addition, he made a film for agricultural college studies on duck conservation.

In 1988 after retirement Richard became an entrepreneur, founding “Wingover Ranch” near Yates City, IL.

He was an avid golfer who was on the Board of Directors for three years at Spring Lake Country Club. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Ducks Unlimited.

His poker buddies will miss him, but his family will miss him more.

He is survived by:
FIVE CHILDREN, Margaret “Peggy” Harris, Cheryl Anderson and her husband Roger, Daniel Altgilbers and his wife Jennifer, Mary Riley and her husband Bill and Richard “Rick” Altgilbers;
NINE GRANDCHILDREN
EIGHT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN
TWO SISTERS, Phyllis McDonald and Judy Mueller
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, and his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Justin Lamborn and one sister, Bootsie Weeks.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Quincy Notre Dame.

    I had the pleasure of knowing Dick when he came to Yates City. He was a wonderful man and I enjoyed our conversations. He always had a smile and became a good friend. He will be missed. My condolences to the Altgilbers family.

    I so sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Altgilbers. He was a wonderful man that greeted me with a smile and a hug every time I saw him. I will miss him very much and I pray for peace and comfort for his loved ones. He is smiling in heaven now
