Richard C. Niekamp

Richard C. Niekamp, age 86, of 6330 N. 60th St., Quincy, died surrounded by his loving wife & family on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 6:35 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. He was born on January 12, 1926 in Adams County, a son of William H. & Fredericka (Alhmeier) Niekamp. He married Marjorie Wiewel on May 20, 1947 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Quincy. She survives

Richard was a life-long farmer retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, and was formerly a member of St. Dominic Church.

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Quincy Boat Club, The Elks Club & St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society. He was former president & director of the Camp Point Farm Mutual Insurance. Richard was one to volunteer often & worked on many church & K of C’s events.

He was on a bowling league for many years, loved card games with family & friends & enjoyed traveling.

He enjoyed & attended many of the grandchildren’s activities.

In addition to his wife, Marjorie, he is survived by four children, Judy Barrett Krall and her husband Vince of Puyallup, WA, Jane Leffers and her husband Floyd, Jeff Niekamp and his wife Nita and Jerel Niekamp and his wife Carolyn, all of Quincy; two brothers, Leonard “Boots” Niekamp and his wife Dorothy, and William Jr. “Sonny” Niekamp and his wife Shirley all of Quincy, and a sister Erma Taylor and her husband Ralph of Camp Point, IL; ten grandchildren, Renae (Dr. Kurt) Besch of Newport Richey, FL, Chad (Cori) Barrett of Kingsville, TX, Lee (Sarah) Leffers, Lisha (Carl) Buckwalter, Cinda (Brian) Barnes, and Trista (Wes) Neisen all of Quincy, Jeffrey (Georgia) Niekamp of Pittsfield, IL, Amanda (John) Fallin of El Paso, TX, Gary (Bonnie) Rankin of Camp Point, IL and Kim Paetow of Loraine, IL; twenty-three great-grandchildren one great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Howard Niekamp, a sister Wilma Mosley, and a son-in-law Fred Barrett of Puyallup, WA.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church concelebrated by Fr. Tom Hagstrom & Fr. Lou Schlangen. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 2223 St. Anthony Road and also on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass at the church. A prayer service will take place Sunday evening during visitation beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus service. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Church, Blessing Hospital Cancer Center, the K of C Mass for the Shut-Ins or a charity of the Donor’s Choice. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
