Richard C. Magliari

Richard C. Magliari of 4816 Pebble Beach Drive in Quincy, IL died on October 3, 2014 at Blessing Hospital. He was a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Business at Quincy University.

Dr. Magliari, the son of Carmine and Jennie Magliari, was a first-generation American born in White Plains, New York on April 28, 1934. Moving to the Midwest to attend college, he fell in love with the heartland and decided to remain there for the rest of his life. Dr. Magliari is a graduate of the University of Dayton, Xavier University and Webster University. Survivors include his beloved wife Peggy, two sons Marc Magliari and Adam (Lisa) Magliari, five grandchildren, and his extended family of nieces and nephews residing in New York. One of his sons Richard and both parents are deceased.

After spending 15 years in the aerospace industry, a decision was made to pursue a lifelong ambition to teach. He joined the faculty of Quincy University in 1971 and fully retired in 2011. As he often told others, together with his family, the classroom was his life. He considered himself a performer; instead of entertaining he provided knowledge. A positive student response was the most exciting part of his work. Although many students have graduated and reached middle age and above, he still considered them “his kids.” Asked when he retired what he wanted to be remembered for. He said, “I have had a great life. I loved all the young people I met, and had a great loving family. You can’t beat that.”

Magliari received a variety of rewards for his service, but he was especially honored by a classroom being named after him. A gift by former student Kevin Breheny and family made it possible.

Committed to the University he chaired various important committees. He chaired the Committee bringing back college football and changing the name from college to university. He fulfilled his mentor Father Melvin Grunloh’s dream by introducing successfully the MBA program, while at the same time creating the Marketing Degree program.

Dr. Magliari was also committed to civic service. He was an elected Alderman for the City of Quincy, Chairman of Quincy Housing Authority, a member of the Great River Development Economic Foundation, and a seminal board member of Illinois Business Hall of Fame.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Quincy University Chapel. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and on Tuesday morning at Quincy University Chapel from 9:30 until the time of the services. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Quincy University for a scholarship to be established in memory of Richard C. Magliari. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A man of great energy and will to use that to inspire smart thinking in his sons and students. Quincy and the University were very fortunate that he answered the call he heard to become a teacher and giving member of the community. I only wish I had been able to take one of his classes.

    Dear Magliari family,
My heartfelt thanks for sharing Richard with us. I knew him many years ago when I attended the college now university, and then again as a member of Historic St. Rose of lima, he loved the latin mass, I met him many times at 8am mass there. He even donated a window for restoration there. He was a fine man to know. I am very happy the pastor, Father Devillers gave his the last sacrament for heaven. A fine man to know.
I will have a mass said for his soul.
Paul K. Geers, president of the Latin Mass Society of QUINCY/ Historic St. Rose of Lima.
