Raymond Leslie Sumpter
Raymond Leslie Sumpter, age 66, of Griggsville, died on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at 5:45 a.m. in his sister’s home in Fowler, IL after a three-month long battle with cancer. Raymond was born on September 3, 1955, in Quincy the son of Harry and Doris (Minor) Sumpter.
Raymond made his home in Griggsville with his mother and stepdad, Jimmy Taylor. When cancer took over his body, his sister brought him home to care for him with the love and support he needed.
He loved camping, fishing, stock car races and a good chili dog and a cold beer. Raymond was an avid arrowhead hunter and collector. Garage sales were right at the top of the list of fun for him. He loved a good treasure find.
Raymond worked at Tate Cheese and retired in November from Illini Hospital.

Thank you and goodbye to all my Valley City Friends and many others. Thanks to Dean Westfall for being my mechanic and friend and keeping my old cars finely tuned and on the road. I want to thank my friend, Dave Hobson for always looking out for me and all the excellent food he brought me. He was always there to help get me to my appointments in Pittsfield. I am most grateful for these dear friends.
Raymond was looking forward to seeing his friend Keith McKristy again, Keith passed away in a bad car accident when the two were teenagers.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley (John) Kroner, brother, Harry (Kathy) Sumpter, two nephews: Ryan (Tonia) Howe and Cory Sumpter, two nieces: Tracy (Shannon) Williams and Stacy (Jay) Gottman, several aunts and uncles, Raymond had a special bond with his Aunt Billie.
Raymond was preceded in death by his father, mother and stepdad, Jim, his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.
There is no visitation, but family and friends are invited to the graveside services. Service arrangements are with Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.

RIP Ray
I worked with Ray for years at Illini. He took pride in his work, and always the first to say he’d bring food when we had carry-ins. His sloppy joes were the best.
Ray was a longtime co-worker and a good friend. I will miss our late night talks and all of the fun times we had at Illini. He was always so thoughtful to clean the snow and ice from my car in the winter and loved when I would cook and bring a little extra for his break. I loved hearing him talk about his family and going to the races. He was truly a special friend and I miss him.
Raymond was a hard working, caring, fine gentleman. I enjoyed talking to him at work at Illini. He is missed by his Illini Family.

Hey Ray Im sending a letter to heaven addressed simply to”My Friend Ray”. Since I couldn’t say goodbye, I wanted to tell you how much your friendship over all the years has meant and still means to me, now more than ever. I will think of you often until we meet again. Thank you Ray!
