Raymond B. “Skip” Vahlkamp, Jr.
Raymond B. “Skip” Vahlkamp, Jr., age 81, of Quincy died on Friday, December 17, 2021 at Blessing Hospital. Skip was born in Quincy on February 3, 1940, a son of Raymond B. “Penie” and Emma (Brinkman) Vahlkamp, Sr. He married Teresa A. Haiducek in St. William Catholic Church in Perry, MO on May 21, 1960. Together, they had five beautiful children.
He was a 1954 graduate of St. John’s School, and a 1958 graduate of Quincy High School.
Skip worked at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, retiring from his position as stationary engineer after working at the Home for 36 years.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. His other memberships include the Knights of Columbus, the Mississippi Valley Hunters and Fisherman’s Association and the Rocky Point Club. Skip was a lifetime member of North Side Boat Club and a member of South Side Boat Club as well.
Skip served as Alderman of the 6th Ward in Quincy for 28 years. During these years, he served on the Quincy Housing Authority, Aeronautics Committee, 9-1-1 Commission and the Oakley Lindsay Center Committee.
After his retirement, he regularly visited with his ‘coffee club’ friends throughout the week. In 2013, he was inducted into the C.Y.O. Hall of Fame for coaching basketball and baseball.
In his free time, he liked to go hunting and fishing with many of his family members and friends. He enjoyed spending time at the family farm and being outdoors whenever possible. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and shared the love of baseball with his family. He was also a fan of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting activities, and as needed, would willingly offer them his coaching advice.
In addition to his wife Teresa, survivors include his children, Susan Vahlkamp, Keith Vahlkamp, Judy Vahlkamp, and Bernie (Mary Pat) Vahlkamp all of Quincy. His daughter-in-law, Melissa Vahlkamp, also survives .Grandchildren: Sarah (Jeffrey Medlin) Vahlkamp, Jake Vahlkamp, Zachary Vahlkamp of Quincy, Lauren (Josh Brunk) Vahlkamp of Elizabethton, TN; Alec Vahlkamp and Wyatt Vahlkamp both of Quincy. Siblings, Margie Rose, Danny Vahlkamp, Elaine (John) McKinstry all of Quincy, Kristine (Lester) Dennis of Liberty, Paulette Vahlkamp of Quincy. Many nieces, nephews and in-laws also survive.
Skip is preceded in death by his parents, his son Brian Vahlkamp, a sister Joan O’Neal, a nephew and several in-laws.
Funeral services are planned for Thursday, December 23, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 22, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh.
Memorials are suggested to Quincy Notre Dame Foundation, Blessed Sacrament Parish, and the Mississippi Valley Hunters and Fisherman’s Association.
On every Monday night from 1984 to 1992, I sat next to Skip as his fellow 6th-ward Alderman. Throughout that time, and ever since, he was always kind and respectful of views different than his. We got a lot of stuff done together those eight years under Mayor Vern Hagstrom. He was a great guy and another Quincy Gem… RIP Skip.
To Teresa and the entire Vahlkamp family, my heart is broken for all of you. To lose your father and your brother, your son, your uncle all within a few weeks is utterly and completely devastating news so sad. Kerri and I wish to send our condolences to the family at the passing of Skip. I knew Skip through soccer and playing against Bernie and Brian. He was a jovial man who always had a smile on his face. We pray for peace and comfort.
Skip was a very good man. The QND family is saddened by his passing. Thank you for thinking of QND as a memorial. We will continue to keep the Vahlkamp family in our thoughts and prayers. We rest assured that Skip is with Brian and his buddy Rich Reis.
