Paula and Michael Chapman

Paula J. Chapman, age 68, and her husband Michael K. Chapman, age 67, died at home in Quincy on Thursday, November 4, 2021 exactly three hours apart after long battles with chronic lung disease.

They met soon after Paula graduated from Highland High School, married on July 22, 1972 in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Ewing, MO, and were inseparable for more than 49 years.

Paula, a daughter of Donald and Maybelle “Chic” (Shortridge) Selby was born October 30, 1953 in Quincy.

Michael, a son of Wilbur and Betty Jo (Miller) Chapman was born August 7, 1954 also in Quincy.

Michael served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring as Sergeant First Class Air Defense Artillery. Paula and their two daughters followed him around the globe throughout his military career, from Key West, FL to Tacoma, WA and even when he served two extended tours in Germany. After his retirement, the couple moved back to their local origins where Paula worked as an office manager at Heartland Resources in Ewing, MO and later at US Bank of Ewing as a teller, from where she retired.

In his free-time, Michael liked hunting for arrowheads, fishing, and listening to classic rock music. Paula was an avid reader and enjoyed time spent with her family. She was an expert at making holidays special for her daughters, her husband, and the soldiers stationed away from their own families when deployed far from home.

Survivors include their two daughters, Jamie Chapman of Quincy; Sommer (Bradley) Darnell of Liberty; and three grandchildren, Sean Davis of Quincy, Braydon Darnell of Ft. Hood, TX and Andrew Darnell of Liberty.

Paula’s sister, Pamala Armbruster of Quincy; Michael’s four brothers, Kenny of LaBelle, MO, Keith, John, and Joel Chapman; and his half-siblings, Scott, Steven and Cassandra Chapman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, also survive.

Their parents preceded them in death., a memorial luncheon will be held at Jamie’s house on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at noon.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Military honors will be bestowed upon Michael at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Great River Honor Flight or American Lung Association. Summer, Jamie and Pam, I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Paula was a great friend when we were in school, then life took us in different directions. I have thought of her often. I have been looking for a Paula Chapman on social media, but I was looking for somebody who lived in Missouri, I do know how much Paula thought of her family. She loved you all so much.
