Paul L. Vancil, age 85, of Quincy, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 19, 1935 in Quincy the son of John Lewis and Velma (Thenhaus) Vancil. Paul married Mary McGrury on June 2, 1956. She survives.

Paul graduated from Quincy High School in 1953. He proudly served his country in the Air Force from 1955 – 1959. He was employed as a union plumber for many years in the Quincy area, and spent most of his career working at William Gold Plumbing and Heating and Sparrow Plumbing.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary are their children: Cynthia Vancil Haxel and Jeffrey (Sheila) Vancil all of Quincy; two grandchildren: Erica (Josh) Orewiler of Lockport, Il, and Justin Vancil of Quincy, two great grandchildren: Jacob and Allie Orewiler of Lockport, Il and his grandpuppy Eva Marie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Frank J Haxel.

Paul had many interests and hobbies he enjoyed throughout his life. As a teen, he worked at Poltisch Hardware and Sporting Goods where he became interested in archery. He later worked at Scottie’s Roller Rink, where he met his wife Mary.

In the early 50s, he built his own race boats and competed with the Christners from Quincy Welding and Albert Scott. Later in the 80’s, he built several national championship winning boats for his son. He also enjoyed pleasure boating on the river.

He enjoyed building RC planes and boats and made several trips to Oshkosh to see the air shows. He was also an avid Indycar and Nascar fan, passing this interest of racing to his children and grandson. Paul also had an artistic side, taking up photography, as well as oil and water color painting.

After retiring he enjoyed cooking and took several classes in New Orleans to work on his skill. Paul loved to travel and take cruises with his wife. Paul enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially sharing his hobbies and interests with them.

Private funeral services will be held, with interment in Greenmount Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Blessing Foundation for Hospice or Quincy Humane Society.
