Paul A. Wellman

Paul A. Wellman, age 87, of Quincy, passed peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2022, in Good Samaritan Home. He was born January 29, 1935, in Quincy, the son of Urban B. and Bertha R.
(Blaesing) Wellman.

Paul graduated from St. Francis Solanus School, and Quincy High School, Class of 1953. After graduation, Paul began his lifelong career with Mercantile Trust & Savings Bank at the 5th &
Maine location as an errand boy, an assistant bookkeeper and teller. He attended the Quincy College Banking School, and was promoted to Manager, and then Vice President, of the 8th & Jersey location.

After 42 years with Mercantile, Paul retired. Upon his retirement, he received a letter of thanks and recognition that read:
“Paul is retiring after 42 years of service! Obviously, this will cause a huge void facing us at the end of the year, because there is no way to replace the amount of experience, knowledge, and many customer relationships he has gained over the years. Paul, we will miss you!”

He made and maintained treasured and lifelong friendships with his co-workers from Mercantile. Paul was a devout Catholic and member of St. Rose of Lima Parish. Through the years he spent his time generously volunteering at St. Rose Church and St. Boniface Church. He and his friend, Ken Gibson, were instrumental with the reopening of St Rose of Lima Parish. They were helpful in getting volunteers to clean the rectory, church, and hall; working at the parish events, and serving on the finance board of the parish.

After retirement, Paul continued his spirit of service, volunteering at St. Mary Hospital and Blessing Hospital, where he helped implement and staff the information desks at the Cancer Center and One-Day Surgery.

He enjoyed traveling to Florida every winter, spending time with his Floridian friends and neighbors.

Paul lived his life fully with compassion and the desire to be helpful. His wonderful sense of humor, wit, and ability to tell a story were traits that complimented his enjoyment of being surrounded by friends and family.

Paul is survived by many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his dear friend and co-worker, Ken Gibson, and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, and a Requiem will be at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, October 23rd, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh. A Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Quincy Humane Society, or Masses may be given in Paul’s memory.

I met Paul right out of high school when I began working at Mercantile Bank. I always considered him a friend and I enjoyed our get togethers with our co workers after our working hours. He and Kenny were such good friends and I knew they brought much happiness to one another. Paul had a great sense of humor and I like that in a person. Rest In Peace, Paul. You were a good person. As ever, Pat Wentura

Paul took a chance and hired me to clean the motor bank at 8th & Jersey when I was only sixteen. Always made me feel very welcomed & included me in everything. Such as rolls he brought in the morning for his staff. There was always one for me there in the evening when I came to clean and it tasted SO GOOD!!!! It was a pleasure to work for you PW!!! Gods speed!!!

Paul was a very kind gentleman, I enjoyed some of the conversations we had. He knew my mother and step-father. I also knew his friend Ken and Ken’s fur baby when I worked at Kingele vet clinic. Together Paul and Ken were a hoot and were together a lot!! May you rest in peace in heaven with your family and friends.
