Oscar A. Hoeckelman, age 90, of 639 York, formerly of 116 North 7th st, died on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in his home. He was born on August 7, 1926 in Quincy, IL the son of Frank & Agnes (Boerder) Hoeckelman. He married Beatrice “Betty” Evans on June 17, 1950 in Chicago, IL. She survives.

Mr. Hoeckelman graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School in 1944. He then served in the United States Army during World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award.

Oscar valued education throughout his life and attended Quincy College, Vandercook College, Chicago Conservatory of Music, Northern Illinois University, Loyola University, National College of Education, Western Illinois University, and Colorado State College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Masters degree in Music Education and Administration.

He worked for many years teaching music in the Chicago Public Schools, directing the band and music classes a Southeastern School District in Augusta Illinois and later was the principal of St. Boniface School in Quincy where he worked for sixteen years before retiring.

Oscar was involved in community organizations such as the United Way, the American Legion, was President and Vice President of the Quincy League of Western Catholic Union, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a former member of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra where he played the oboe. In addition, he enjoyed fishing, golfing and was an avid reader.

He was a religious man who volunteered at St. Boniface Church as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Director and founder of the Handbell Choir, member of the Parish Council, and Associate Director of Sacramental Programs for CCD. Later he was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church.

FOUR CHILDREN: Frances Graff & her husband Thomas of Quincy, IL; Irene Parker of Iowa, John Hoeckelman and his wife Sharon of Virginia; Rosemary Jones and her husband Brian.
A SON-IN-LAW: Dan Schmitt of Georgia.
SIXTEEN GRANDCHILDREN: Christopher Schmitt and his wife Melissa, Andrew Schmitt and his wife Heather, Steven Schmitt, Kelley Hibbard, Kay Wines, Charlie Graff, Amanda Graff, Victoria Moore and her husband Joe, James Parker, Sarah Parker, Jessica Parker, John Parker, Kristy Parker, Marissa Parker, Austin Hoeckelman and Christian Hoeckelman.
FIVE GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Sydney Hibbard, Derek Hibbard, Ellison Schmitt, Joseph Moore and Michael Moore.
SISTER-IN-LAW: Bernadine Hoeckelman
Numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings: Clarence Hoeckelman, Helen Hoeckelman and Ralph Hoeckelman, two children: David Anthony Hoeckelman and Mary Alice Schmitt, and a son-in-law: James Parker.

A Memorial mass will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 10:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment in St. Boniface Cemetery with military rites at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the services. Memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for masses in Oscar’s memory.
