Mr. James E. “Jim” Johnson

Mr. James E. “Jim” Johnson, age 91, of the Illinois Veterans Home, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on November 23, 1924 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Raymond & Madge (Higgins) Johnson. Jim was a graduate of Quincy High School. He married Catherine E. Niemann on December 30, 1946 in St. Mary Catholic Church in Quincy. She preceded him in death on October 21, 2012. Mr. Johnson served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in Papua New Guinea.

Mr. Johnson was a well-known painting contractor in the Quincy area and owned and operated his own business for 57 years. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Mr. Johnson was very active in his church and community. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, Usher and a Trustee of the parish. Jim was a member of the North Side Businessmen’s Association. He was active in the CYO where he had served on the board and had been president of the board. He is also in the CYO Hall of Fame. Jim coached the 7th and 8th grade baseball team from Blessed Sacrament School for 13 seasons. He was an avid fly fisherman and also greatly enjoyed gardening and his yard work.

Reidner and her husband David of Nauvoo, IL; Catherine Rockwell and her husband Garry of Canton, MO; Bob Johnson and his wife Jil of Quincy; Ted Johnson and his wife Annette of Quincy; Jeff Johnson and his wife LeeAnne of Katy, TX; Mike Johnson and his wife Brenda, and Phill Johnson and his wife Jill of Quincy.

TWENTY SIX-GRANDCHILDREN: Mike T. Sorensen and his wife Mauli; Barbara Reidner; Alicia Espe and her husband Geoff; Gregory Rockwell, Teresa Reilly and her husband James; Jason Rockwell; James “Jay” Johnson III and his wife Kelly; Suzanne Hardiek and her husband Mike; Jayme Connell and her husband Bill; Tracy Murphy and her husband David; Ryan Johnson and his wife Kimberly; Kari Smith and her husband Steve; Laura Smith and her husband Tim; Ted Johnson and his wife Sidney; Ben Johnson and his wife Dale Lynn; Samantha Haley and her husband Anthony; Christine Johnson; Andrew Johnson; Tyler Little; Brooke Little; Miki Johnson; Ashlen Johnson; Alex Johnson; Phil Johnson II; Jenna Johnson and Paul Johnson.

In addition to his wife, Jim was also preceded in death by his parents, one son James Johnson II, and brothers-in-law Ferd Niemann II and Jack Shankland.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 9:30 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament School or to the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund.

    I was saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. He was a man of great faith, commitment to family, and a fabulous businessman. He truly leaves a legacy in each of you. I will pray that HE grants you the strength you need to get through the tough times ahead. I will also pray that HE fills your hearts and minds with only the good memories you shared with your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
