Miles Richard “Dick” Barnhart

Miles Richard “Dick” Barnhart, age 94, of Quincy, died on Monday, July 7, 2014 in Good Samaritan Home. He was born on July 30, 1919 in Flanagan, IL, the son of Pierce and Lenore (Milborn) Barnhart. Dick attended elementary and high school in Flanagan. Dick attended the University of Illinois for a semester and then entered the work force at the age of 19 years. Dick began his insurance career at the Kemper Insurance Company in Chicago. His insurance employment led him to places in Midwestern USA. He then went to work for Hardware Mutual Insurance transferring to Stevens Point, WI and then transferring to Detroit as Branch Manager. He then took an 18 month leave to serve in the US Army Air Corps stationed in Texas. Shortly after his honorable discharge, and returning to Hardware Mutual, the offer of a position with Employers Mutual Companies (EMC) in Des Moines, IA, looked promising and the decision to make the change was made. He began with EMC as a field Supervisor in Nebraska. Kansas City was the next Site in employment involving the consolidation of all areas of insurance in to the newly formed branch in the Kansas-Missouri region. After eight years here, Dick in 1966 was transferred to the Des Moines Branch. The office staff consisted of approximately 90 employees and on retiring 24 years later the staff had enlarged to over 200 people. Upon arriving in the Des Moines Branch, he enrolled in the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) course, designed specifically for the insurance industry. Often the CPCU is required because the course presents the knowledge of the overall techniques in the industry. The 12 aspects of the course are usually taken over a period of four years. With that accomplishment, Dick attained the position of Resident Vice President of EMC and continued to work as a Branch Manager until his retirement January 31, 1990 ending a 44 year career at EMC.

Approximately 18 months later, Dick and Ruth moved to Scottsdale, AZ where they resided for 17 years after which they moved to Quincy, IL, his home state, to be closer to family.

Among the many activities Dick enjoyed through the years included wood working, table games, hunting and fishing, tennis, golf, hiking an last but not least both domestic and foreign travel. He had visited approximately 40 countries.

Survivors include his wife Ruth Barnhart, five children from a previous marriage: Judith Barford of Charleston, IL; Pamela Anderson and her husband Emmett of Archie, MO; Miles Christopher Barnhart and his wife Debra of Springfield, MO; Richard Barnhart and his wife Rita of Tulsa, OK; and Deborah Bunts and her husband Don of Fallbrook, CA. 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces nephews and other relatives also survive.

Aunt Ruth, so sorry on your loss, but what a life! To me, Dick was a class act, intelligent, curious, extremely kind and professional. I was blessed to know him. Kari & Ed Shea
