Michael R. Markert

Michael R. Markert age 54, of Quincy, died on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 8:40 a.m. in Blessing Hospital. Michael was born February 10, 1961 in Quincy, a son of Joseph and Peggy (Garrett) Markert. He married Julie A. (Schmitt) Markert and she survives.

Michael worked at Kohl Wholesale for 25 years in the Kohl’s warehouse. He retired last October after 25 years, for health reasons. He was a 1979 graduate of Camp Point Central high School.

Michael was a member of The Crossing, where he was baptized on October 2, 2014. He spent this past year encouraging and reaching out to others, to help them get God into their lives. He was a witness to his own tremendous faith, praying for all and with those around him. Michael was very grateful for the love and support he was given by his family and friends.

His pastimes included gardening, hunting and fishing. In 2006, he began oil painting as a hobby, and his talent as a landscape artist was developed. He happily gave many of his paintings as gifts to family, friends and caregivers. His four grandchildren were his pride and joy, his three granddaughters will always know that they are Grandpa’s “Special Girls.”

In addition to his wife Julie, survivors also include his mother, Peggy Markert of Quincy; sons, Ryan (Jeri) Kistner of Eagan, MN and Patrick (Maggie) Kistner of Quincy; four grandchildren, Camille and Colette Kistner of Egan, MN and Emmy and Daxton Kistner of Quincy; siblings, Pamela Markert, Quincy, Sam Markert (Lesa), Camp Point, Chuck Markert, Ursa, Janet Markert, Quincy, Teresa Linville (Frank), Cross Lanes, WV., Patrick Markert (Catherine Anne), Miami Beach, FL., Andrea Markert, Atlanta, GA., Rebekka Bowen (Geoffrey), Chapel Hill, NC., and Elizabeth Markert, Atlanta, GA; and a brother in-law Michael (Terri) Schmitt of Hinsdale, IL. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Joseph Markert, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at The Crossing 48th & Maine Streets Quincy, IL by Devin Cashman. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Springfield, IL Chapter or to The Crossing.
