Michael “Mike” Hamann

Michael “Mike” Hamann, age 69, of 3821 Greenfield Road, died on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Iowa City Va Medical Center. He was born on August 14, 1945 in Quincy the son of Carl F. & Mary (Hickey) Hamann. Mike was a 1963 graduate of Christian Brothers High School. He married Carolyn Kaufmann on June 17, 1967. She survives.

Mr. Hamann worked for Monogram Industries. Later he worked for Kuester Tool and Die and then as a purchasing agent for Gardner Denver until his retirement. He was a Navy Veteran. Mike was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and a former long-time member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

Mike was an avid St. Louis sports fan, always cheering on the Cardinals, Blues and Rams. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge. Mike had recently become a volunteer driver for the Veterans Administration, transporting local veterans to the VA hospital in Iowa City for doctor appointments.

Mike loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, attending as many of their events as possible.

Mike was thoroughly enjoying his retirement. He and Carolyn, along with various friends, would spend weeks at a time traveling the country visiting new and favorite places.

Mike always had a smile on his face and never knew a stranger. He was always laughing and teased those he loved. He has touched so many lives and will be forever missed.

In addition to his wife Carolyn, he is also survived by:
TWO CHILDREN: Jill Hart and her husband Kevin of Quincy and Jennifer Leonard of Quincy.
SIX GRANDCHILDREN: Conner, Katy and Jocelyn Hart, Jessica and Emily Leonard and Aiden Brunier.
SIBLINGS: Kay Penrose, Ronald Hamann and his wife Rose, Rick Hamann and his wife Maggie all of Quincy, and Kathy Calhoun of Canton, IL.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 9:30 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM and memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund.

    Dear Hamann family. A name I have known all my life at St. Rose. How sorry I am to hear about Michael, and not long after his mother died, all fine and good people to know.     I rode with Mike to Iowa City once and will never forget his smile and laughter. All of us disabled veterans will miss him sorely, and I wish to extend my sympathy to his family. May your tears be dried by the Angels.

    Mike was a year ahead of me in school at CBHS. Always enjoyed seeing and talking to him. He will be missed.

    Mike was a beloved volunteer at the Iowa City VA medical center. He was dedicated to his work driving Veteran patients from Quincy, IL to Iowa City for their appointments. He had a great smile and always made patients and fellow volunteers feel welcomed. He will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies are with Carolyn and his family.
