Michael E. Rudd, Sr.

Michael E. “Magic” Rudd, Sr., age 56, of Quincy, died on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on September 11, 1961 in Quincy, the son of Harold Edward Rudd, Sr. and Marilyn Virginia Green.

Michael Rudd was the ultimate QHS Blue Devil. He will be remembered for electrifying crowds, his Mighty Mouse game, and a personality that radiated across gym floors. He was a true magician with the basketball, hence the name “MAGIC”

Mike was a legend on and off the court. Throughout the years he inspired and touched many through his community involvement.

He was a dedicated entrepreneur opening up his own lawn care service, Magic’s Lawn Care, which greatly served his community.

Mike served as a head coach for QYBA for many years. He taught private basketball lessons, and was a head coach at Quincy Junior High School. He mentored many coaches, and emphasized on teaching basketball through the children and to always have fun. Throughout his career as a coach, he taught life lessons that are utilized on the court and will be remembered for a lifetime.

Mike was a referee for many years, but he was not in the gym to only call the game. He utilized his platform to teach and motivate the players to be better players in the game and life.

Aside from basketball, he was a loving father and papa. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and seeing them laugh. Most of all, making his kids happy and seeing them smile was his ultimate accomplishment.

Mike was a loving brother, son and friend. He had a special spirit that could light up a room. Once you were introduced to his magic, you would never forget it. He will be greatly remembered for his love for all people, dedication to the youth, and being the great person we all grew to love.

“If your yard looks tragic, call on Magic!”

Mike is survived by his children: Sharnel (Melissa) Shaw of Columbia, MO, Jason (Laura) Shaw of Quincy, Michael Rudd, Jr. of Kansas City, MO, Briton Rudd of Marietta, GA and Brandi Rudd of Columbia, MO; brothers, Harold Rudd, Jr., Randy Rudd, Stanley Rudd and Rodrick Rudd all of Quincy and Mark Rudd of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters, Jan M. Green of Quincy and Aunt Buena Brooks of Quincy; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Our deepest sympathy to the family. It’s interesting how our lives pass each other. I (Joanne) didn’t know Mike as an adult only grade school age. Went to summer school at Dewey Schl. and met him & we had a blast. Was a friendly kid. I was at QND & he was QHS graduated same year. Last 25yr’s my husband & I live across the street from the Rudd’s family house back then on 15th College. Would seem from all the wonderful condolences he wasn’t just a friendly kid but a kind adult. Prayer’s for you all..

We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy at Michael’s passing. We had not met him personally until our boys played softball with and against him. He affectionately called us “mom and pops” after our first meeting. The smiles and kindnesses of Michael will always be remembered. May he rest in peace.

Please accept my deepest your families loss. Magic was an inspiration to young aspiring Quincy athletes for many years. Magic’s basketball ability is well documented but his fierce competitive spirit is something I’ll never forget. I witnessed this at both the high school and collegiate level. I was blessed to call him friend. May God comfort you in this difficult time but know his legacy will live on through numerous athletes and friends he touched.
