Melvin L. Maas
Melvin L. Maas age 81, of Quincy died in his home Monday, December 27, 2021 at 8:15 a.m.
Melvin was born on April 1, 1940 in Quincy, a son of Elmer and Coletta (Wellman) Maas. He married Sharon Kay Smith on June 22, 1960 in St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Mendon. Sharon preceded him in death on September 4, 2019.
Melvin was a hard-working, self-made man.
He began his career working with Moorman ManufacturingADM as an industrial electrician in June of 1961, and retired as the engineering manager February 25, 2005 after 40 plus years with the company. After retirement he continued to work with ADM as an electrical engineering consultant for an additional 5 years. Prior to his employment with MoormansADM he worked at Deters Dairy Farm.
Melvin was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at church, participated in the funeral luncheons and was a willing helper for whatever needed to be done at the parish.
His passions were his horses and his family. Melvin was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association and the Illinois Ridge Riders. He won numerous Grand Champion and first place trophies with his horses at regional events for many years. Melvin was especially proud of the numerous prize winning horses he foaled at his Maple Hills Stable complex. When Melvin wasn’t working with his horses he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great granddaughter at various events. He also cherished every moment spent with the grandchildren sharing his love and knowledge of the horses with them.
Survivors include his three children: Woody (Stacey) Maas, William “Bill” Maas and Sandy (Dave) Greving all of Quincy.
Grandchildren: Garrett (Kelseigh) Maas; Bodie Maas; D.J. Greving; Sam Greving; and one great-granddaughter: Leighnkon Maas all of Quincy. Melvin was also survived by several brothers and sisters: Gerald Maas and his wife Shirley, Raymond Maas and his wife Margie, Robert Maas and his wife Connie, Thomas Maas and his wife Julie, Elmer Maas and his wife Jeanie, Florence Smith, Lucille (Fritzie) Nieders, and Barbara Hilgenbrink along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by, parents, and the following siblings: Loretta Klauser, JoAnn Dreyer, Virgil Maas, Clarence Maas, Rosie Benz, and Clara Neisen.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 9:45 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:30 in St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment in St. Anthony Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Friday evening, from 3:00-6:00 PM at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church and The Adams County Fair Horse Arena
Melvin was a great guy, friend, and neighbor. He was a very hard worker and never stoped till the job was done right. He was always like the dad of the neighborhood, always watching and helping out whenever he could. He could also be a prankster when the opportunity would present itself. He once placed store bought eggplants in our garden trying to surprise us with ripe veggies a little early. He raised three really good kids even though he was always busy. Our most heartfelt condolences go out to all of the family, he will be missed by so many. His loyalty is unmatched. Rest In Peace our friend, your chores are done! Ken & Pat
Melvin was a dear friend of mine. We spent many hours at horse shows together along with his wife Sharon. I am deeply saddened by his lost. He will he greatly missed. My Hart breaks for his family that he loved so much, along with his grandchildren. Till we ride again
