Mary Nell Meyer
Mary Nell Meyer of 119 Knollwood in Quincy, IL died on Thursday, April 4, 2024. She was born in Hannibal, MO on August 16, 1942, the daughter of William and Gertrude Zimmerman Frier. She married George C. Meyer on August 24, 1963. Mary Nell attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School in Hannibal, MO, and graduated from McCooey High School in 1959. She received an academic scholarship from Quincy College and began school there in 1959. While at Quincy College, she met the “love of her life”, also a QC student, George Meyer. She was elected Homecoming Queen in 1961, and went on to student teach at Quincy Senior High School in 1963.
She was hired to teach eighth grade U.S. History and English in 1963 at Quincy Junior High School. A week before both George and Mary Nell began their teaching careers at QJHS, they married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hannibal, MO. In 1967, after four years of teaching, Mary Nell decided to be a stay at home mom following the arrival of their first born son, Timothy Michael. In 1971 Edward (Ted) William was born, followed by Susan Elizabeth in 1977.
Mary Nell returned to teaching by working as the coordinator with the homebound students at Blessing and St. Mary Hospitals for fourteen years. She was an outstanding teacher who was highly respected by her students. She built strong relationships with her students from all walks of life, and many of them came back to visit with her after they became adults.
She was a longtime member of St. Peter Catholic Church where she served as a member of various committees and a volunteer teacher in the religious education classes. For years, Mary Nell and George delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program and firmly believed in the mission of helping those in need.
Mary Nell leaves behind her husband George, her children Edward (Natalie) Meyer and Susan (Jason) Scott, her grandchildren William Timothy Scott, Colin Parker Scott, Elizabeth Mary Scott, and Henrik George Thomas Meyer. Survivors also include her sister-in-law Susie Frier, brother John (Becky) Frier, sister Margaret Ann (C.V.) White, sister Maureen Mau, and many nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Mary Nell was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elizabeth Ann, her brother Bill, and the most painful for her and her family occurred on October 19, 1994 when her oldest son, Timothy Michael, died from complications from an appendectomy.
Mary Nell was a friend to everyone she met and never missed an opportunity to help others. She gave of her time, talents, and treasures to all in her family and in her community. Despite the progression of Alzheimer’s, up until her last days she maintained her social graces and was quick with a compliment and a smile for all she encountered. She will be greatly missed by many.

Oh Mary Nell, I will miss you so, you are one of the most generous persons I have ever known, you were my big sister I never had.
I thank you so much, that you were so good to both my parents, but especially my Dad,your Uncle Al. You spent so much time with him after Mom passed and he loved you so.
Heaven is lucky they are getting a new Angel and hope a few of them can play a good game of cards, and a lively board game.
Love you Mary Nell.
We admire and thank you for your service to our community. We thank you for your kindness too. Mario especially appreciated getting to know you when you worked together at Catholic Charities Food Bank. May you now receive your eternal reward and rest in the arms of Jesus. 😊❤️
George, how sad I was to learn of Mary Nell’s death. Yours was a loving and unselfish marriage. Sending prayers for your comfort in this difficult time.
George & Family,
Back when my office was at 20th & Maine, Mary Nell would stop by while walking for exercise and visit and I always enjoyed the time she spent doing that. I missed seeing her in Church and feared she was not doing well. We both lost a son and George and I both lost a kidney. I will miss her. 🙏🏻
Amazing lady who will be missed! Sending prayers to George…..Ted …and Susan…..

Certainly God has greeted Mary Nell in heaven! She was a smiley person on earth! What a role model she exhibited to teachers, friends, and students, whom she touched! May God give you all strength, peace, and comfort!
Dear George and Family,
Thinking of you and remembering when we were neighbors of yours on Maine Street. Mary Nell was always so friendly. We will miss seeing her at the Blue Devil and Quincy University basketball games.

George and family,
I was saddened to hear of Mary Nell’s passing. She was an “angel on Earth” for so many. I will pray that God gives you the strength you need in the days ahead, and that HE will fill your hearts with only the great memories you created, and shared with her. God Bless.

Sending much love and prayers to you Uncle George, Ted and Susan! Aunt MaryNell will be greatly missed. Although we were all far apart she always took time to ask how I was and how Bill, Ryan and Emily were doing She would have me send pictures of the kids to keep up. She was just a sweet and kind lady and a great aunt. Love to you all!!
Farewell to the GREATEST TEACHER of all times. My heart is broken but the love and memories will live on. You were loving and compassionate and always willing to lend a helping hand. I am so GRATEFUL to GOD for placing you in the lives of my children and myself. You rarely missed a basketball game of either Kyle or Shy. So so supportive. We had a teacher student love beyond words and/or comprehension. I was one of your students when you were carrying your 1st born while teaching US History; a subject I begin to love because of you. With the few minorities in the classtoom back in the 60’s, you treated us equally and with rewspect. I could go on and on about this GRAND LADY but the tears are blurring my typing. THANKS Susan for sharing this phenomenal woman with my family. Condolences, hugs and prayers.
George, I’m so very sorry to hear of Mary Nell’s passing. She was one of a kind and I enjoyed every second when I was with her. She had a special spirit that will live on in her children and grandchildren. You guys were the best neighbors and I’ll never forget those years. Prayers for you and your family 🙏

Mary Nell and George(Keet),
My wife, Sue, and I are truly heartbroken. You both are the examples of what we hope to become. I always enjoyed my phone conversations with you and Mary Nell and always referred to myself as “her good looking cousin”. Obviously, that was an overstatement. Please know that you and your family are in our prayers and thoughts. Mary Nell was an exceptional person and was the reason my Dad(her Uncle) lived as long as he did. He and I always talked about both of you when I was with him at the nursing home. Please give your kids and grandkids a special hug tonight from us. Heaven is better off today.
Love, Jim frier
George & Family,
We were so sorry to hear the news about Mary Nell. I will always remember her warmth and kindness and the special bond you both had with my parents. Blessings to you and the family. Paul & Nino
So sorry to see of Mary Nell’s passing. I was friends with Tim in high school and would see Mr and Mrs Meyer at school events and at QCT. She was always quick with a compliment for me, my mom, or the theater. Later in life, when I would be back in Quincy to visit, I would run into her and we would reminisce about Tim. She was such a lovely person. It’s hard when our parents or loved ones pass- I hope the family can find comfort in their memories. Bless you-
Dear George, Ted and Susan,
As I sit here with tears running down my face writing this I am so sorry for your loss. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t think of my best friend and your son/brother Tim. Mary Nell was my 2nd mother growing up and a roll model to all. She was such a loving and caring person. We had as many chats together as any mother to son could have. I remember all the Christmas Eves I spent at your house playing pool and Trivial Pursuit with your awesome family! Your family introduced me to boating and the other memories we have together are priceless. Heaven took an angel from earth. May God rest her soul.
George,
I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful Mary Nell. Thinking of you and sending prayers for peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the wonderful family of our beloved Mary Nell. Friends since our college days, we have admired and loved the unique person was. Always reaching out to help, comfort, support and inspire, she impacted our lives, leaving each of us a better person for having known her. Our many trips to QU away basketball games will always be a cherished memory. We hope to carry on her spirit of giving and may she always rest in peace.
George and Family,
Thoughts are with you today and comfort in knowing a place has been prepared for her. Mary Nell was more than a teacher she was an inspiration. Having her as a mentor and role model was such a Blessing to all of us who were fortunate to be her students.
Keet and family. I am with you in thoughts and prayers today. I wish I could be with you this morning. Mary Nell was always one of my favorite people on this earth. I will always remember our visit and Mass attendance on my last trip to Quincy. God bless you all.
Mary Nell was an amazing woman. I so enjoyed working with her as a dance and cheerleading mom. May God give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.
My deepest sympathies to the Meyer family. Dr. and Mrs. Meyer will always have a special place in my family’s hearts. The amount of care and generosity shown towards my family and I will be cherished for a lifetime. I always looked forward to seeing Mrs. Meyer when I would return home and attend a blue devil game, because she would always have a compliment, big smile, and a hug waiting for me. I appreciate her attending my high school basketball games and finding so many other ways to support my family and I. Thank you Dr. Meyer and family for sharing her with my family. She was truly ONE OF A KIND and will be truly missed. Sending prayers, love and tight hugs. Rest well, Mrs. Meyer. You have earned it❤️.
