Mary Michele “Mitzi” Ertel

Mary Michele ‘Mitzi’ Ertel, age 63, of 510 Kimberly Drive, died on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 6:07 PM in her home. She was born on January 17, 1955 in Quincy, Illinois the daughter of Dale & Leatrice (Noftz) Veach. Mitzi graduated from Southeastern High School and was in the first graduating class for nursing from John Wood Community College. She married the only man she ever fell in love with, William E. ‘Bill’ Ertel on October 3, 1981 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Golden, IL, where she was baptized and confirmed. He survives.

Mitzi was a talented artist and was known for her decorating and design skills. She enjoyed sports and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues. Mitzi loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and was especially well known for her decorated sugar cookies. She also had a great love for animals and her pets.

However, more than anything else, Mitzi was the heart of her family. She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother and ‘Nonny’. She loved following her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Outside of her immediate family, Mitzi touched many lives and was a surrogate mother to many. Mitzi was respected for her compassion and knowledge as a nurse at St. Mary Hospital and later in her role with Patient Financial Services at Blessing Health System where she had many friends.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by:
HER MOTHER: Leatrice Veach of Quincy.
THREE CHILDREN: Mitch Ertel and his wife Lindsay of Quincy; Alex Ertel of Quincy and Lucy Ertel also of Quincy.
TWO GRANDCHILDREN: Madison and Will Ertel.
FOUR SIBLINGS: Greg Veach and his wife Trudy of Bloomington, IL; Ross Veach and his wife Janet of Kalamazoo, MI: Amanda Moon of Leavenworth, KS and Jamie Veach and his wife Amy of Marceline, IL.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Mitzi was preceded in death by her father.

A Memorial visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy. Memorials may be made to Quincy Humane Society or Diabetes Association of Illinois.
