Martin E. “Marty” Peters

Martin E. Peters, 60, a well-known and respected business leader in the Quincy community, died on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in Osage Beach, MO at his beloved lake house. Martin (Marty) was born February 10, 1957, in Quincy, a son of Charles R. and Carlene C. (Obert) Peters.

Marty was a 1975 graduate of Catholic Boys High School and a 1979 graduate of Quincy College. He married the love of his life, Janet R. Bocke, on July 18, 1981, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Quincy. They spent an amazing 36 years together, raising their four children, and were best friends in both work and relaxation. Marty was a co-owner of Peters Heating and Air Conditioning. He was a member of the Church of St. Peter. He was also a member of Quincy Homebuilders, serving as past president, the YMCA Building and Grounds Committee, and a past member of Quincy Rotary.

Marty had unending energy and an amazing work ethic. He was an accomplished athlete and played multiple sports through high school and college. He and his teammates were inducted into the Quincy Notre Dame Hall of Fame for football in 2002 and for baseball in 2010.

To his children and many of his co-workers at Peters, Marty was an incredible mentor and supporter. He worked relentlessly to help build the company to what it is today, expanding it to eight locations throughout Illinois and Missouri. He spent his entire adult life renovating his historic home and the homes of his family. He impressed everyone with his self-taught skills and abilities. Marty had been in the process of remodeling his Lake of the Ozarks house to provide a gathering place for his entire family. Many happy memories will continue to be shared at that beautifully renovated home. Marty was always looking ahead to the next project, but he never hesitated to assist anyone else who needed his help.

Everything Marty did was for his family; they were his entire life. Not only did he give 100% at work, but when home, he gave his fullest to the family. He was very proud of the achievements and individual talents of his children. He traveled near and far to see his daughter, Emily, participate in gymnastic events and attended all the Blue Devil basketball games to watch her cheer. He took up hunting as a hobby so he could spend quality time with his son, Dominic, and he was the Number One fan at all the sporting events of his sons, Christopher and Lance. Marty also played a vital role in the careers of his children, offering both personal and business advice. He was the best “PaPa” to his five grandchildren, and they loved every moment spent with him. Marty had a huge circle of friends and was a wonderful example for how to balance work and fun and live life to its fullest.

Marty will be greatly missed by his family, friends, co-workers, and the Quincy and surrounding communities.

Survivors include his wife Janet and their children: Emily (Robert) Tait, Dominic (Megan) Peters, both of Quincy, Christopher (Emily) Peters of Lake St. Louis, MO, and Lance Peters of Quincy. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Lawson and Connor Tait, and their baby brother due in May; and Dylan, Alex and Maryn Peters.

Marty is also survived by siblings: Shirley (Bruce) Hoelscher of O’Fallon, MO, Rodney (Marsha) Peters of Hannibal, MO, Michael (Susie) Peters, Allen Peters, Rita (Ron) Genenbacher, all of Quincy, Sheila (Mark) Damon of Hannibal, MO, and Shelly (Rick) Evans, Rhonda (Terry) Bower, Tony Peters, and Bo (Susan) Peters, all of Quincy.

Other survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary (Jerry) Loos, Barb (Mike) Klingner, Susie (Rich) Niemann, Jr., Henry (Julie) Bocke, and John (Ginger) Bocke, all of Quincy, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carlene Peters, father and mother in law, Richard and Marilyn Bocke, and his brother, Clyde.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter by Monsignor Leo Enlow.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Peter. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Grade School or Quincy Notre Dame.

I had the pleasure of working with Lance and Marty recently on a new whole house HVAC system. I commented to other people how impressed I was at, not only their technical knowledge & ability, but how obviously proud Marty was of Lance (and all the children and his wife).

Marty just beamed when he talked about Lance while Lance was standing right there. It filled my heart with gladness to see such an obviously great father, son and family. Marty’s balance of fine workmanship, work ethic and family life was obvious… today, that is a rare thing.

I can not fathom how difficult it must be for the Peter’s family. My heart goes out to you all. My husband and I just want to add that it was an honor knowing (for even a short time) and working with such a wonderful person.
And… The obituary was beautiful and heartfelt.

    Our deepest condolences,
    Liz and Chris Solaro

Was sad to hear the passing of Marty. I just spoke to him at the Y a couple of weeks ago while working out. We played a lot of softball together and against one another. He was a great guy and always had a smile on his face. One of the BEST!
