Marcellus J. “Marce” Deters, 100, 724 South 48th Street, Quincy, died at 3:32 p.m. Sunday, January 10, in the Emergency Room of Blessing Hospital. He was born July 3, 1915, in Quincy, the son of William H. and Helen E. (Timpe) Deters. He married Marcella M. Freiburg on Sept. 14, 1940, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Quincy. She died Nov. 10, 1995.

Marce was well-known in the Quincy community, largely because of his longtime co-ownership and co-management of Deters All Star Dairy. Marce owned and operated Deters All Star Dairy, along with his parents, brothers and sister for more than 70 years. In addition to helping manage the day-to-day operations of the business, he delivered milk door-to-door, worked at the dairy stores, worked on the farm and maintained the fleet of dairy trucks. He was knowledgeable about construction and built or remodeled many of the facilities around the dairy processing plant and many of the dairy stores.

He enjoyed travel, especially to the national parks, visiting his adult children throughout the United States and Europe, and spent many wonderful vacations in Clearwater, Florida. Family was his priority and along with his wife, Marcella, they raised six children. He also cared for Marcella during her seven-year battle with cancer. He considered it a privilege to be able to work daily with his siblings, and in later years to meet daily in the office with them. He enjoyed baseball and was an avid Cardinal fan. He celebrated his 100th birthday with a family trip to a Cardinal game. He was a long-standing member and active supporter of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by six children: Margie Thompson of Quincy, Dr. Donald (Lynn) Deters of Bowling Green, Ohio, Jeanne (Phil) Soebbing of Quincy, Dianne (Jim) Wyllie of Monte Sereno, CA, Dr. David (Lynn) Deters of Quincy, Joan (Chris) Hunt of Champaign; five grandchildren, Dr. Brian (Chelsea) Soebbing of Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Steven Soebbing of Quincy, Kevin Wyllie of Portland, OR, Sara Deters of Columbia, MO, and Lauren Hunt of Champaign; one great-grandchild, Benjamin Morgan Soebbing, of Philadelphia, PA; two brothers, William H. (Ruth) Deters, Jr., and Robert R. (Dorothy) Deters, and a sister Norma M. Weiman, all of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his spouse, a grandson, Dr. Morgan Deters, three brothers, Fabian, Alvin (Whitey) and Richard Deters (at age 6), five brothers-in-law, Bernard Weiman, Paul, Arthur, Harold and Jerome Freiburg, and three sisters-in-law, Virginia Terwelp Deters, Margie Doellman Deters, and Rita Toomey Freiburg.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Church of St. Peter or the John Wood Community College Marce and Marcella Deters Scholarship Fund for the Music Department.
