Leroy Simon Holtschlag, 70, of 2512 Monroe, Quincy, died at 12:23 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2016 in Blessing Hospital’s Emergency Room, Quincy, Illinois.

He was born in Quincy on April 6, 1946, a son of Louis and Laura Schenk Holtschlag. He married Evelyn Bowen on July 17, 1971, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Barry; she survives.

Mr. Holtschlag was a 1964 graduate of Christian Brothers High School and he received a bachelor of arts in sociology from Quincy College in 1977. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. He worked for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for 25 years, serving in a variety of staff positions, including investigator, follow-up worker, resource worker and staff development coordinator. He retired in December 2002 and then worked part-time for seven years for Personal Care Services as a quality assurance worker in adult residential facilities in Monroe City and Hannibal, Mo. He was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mr. Holtschlag was a 7th Ward Alderman on the Quincy City Council from 1985-1992. He received the Quincy Neighborhood Federation’s Theda Jansen Juvenile Protection Award for outstanding work with the children of the community in 1990, and he served for several years as an assistant coach for the Quinsippi Soccer League. He enjoyed spending time with family, particularly his grandchildren. He collected, refinished and sold antique furniture and frequently participated in area flea markets. He also collected coins, antique toy guns, and Native American artifacts and was an avid card player. He was a member of the Quincy Area Coin Club and the Hannibal Coin Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sarah Holtschlag of Cambridge, Mass., and Karen Agrimonti and her husband, Tony, of Quincy; and a son, Jonathan Holtschlag and his wife, Ashley, of Quincy. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Zoe, Aubrey, and Aidan Agrimonti of Quincy; five brothers, Louis (Lola) Holtschlag, Ken (Terri) Holtschlag, and Pete (Kathy) Holtschlag of Quincy; George (Mary Pat) Holtschlag of Round Oak, Ga.; and Steve (Debbie) Holtschlag of O’Fallon, Mo.; five sisters, Mary Miller, Helen Jansen, Ceil (Les) Duesterhaus, and Delores Ringenberg of Quincy, and Alice (Dick) Mast of Normal; Evelyn’s sister, Linda Fennell (Jim Sheffield) of Quincy, and her two brothers, Ronnie (Pam) Bowen of Barry and Curt (Mary) Bowen of Wylie, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Holtschlag; a brother, Thomas Holtschlag; his parents-in-law, Jim and Hazel Bowen; and two brothers-in-law, Russ Jansen and Bill Fennell.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Monsignor Michael Kuse. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 4:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
